If you want to disappear into the woods for a few days without actually having to rough it like one of your uncle's hiking trips, the Rogue River in Southern Oregon is pretty much the gold standard.
It’s one of the original eight rivers protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and it completely lives up to the billing. You’ve got rugged canyon walls, massive trees, and water that shifts from glassy green pools to rushing Class III-IV rapids like Blossom Bar.
The best part? You can spend your day rafting, hiking, swimming, spotting bald eagles and black bears, and then pull up to a camp, accessible only by boat or foot. You get served a hot family-style dinner, followed by a sweet dessert, and then you crash into a tent where you fall asleep to the sound of moving water. Then you wake up, witness the must rising off the water with a cup of hot coffee in hand, and do it all over again.

The Rogue River has enjoyable and consistent flows this summer because of the William L. Jess dam and the water it stores in Lost Creek Lake. Without the reservoir, we would be experiencing much lower levels than what we are seeing out there every day.
Originally named the Lost Creek Dam, it was built for the purpose of flood mitigation, though it does produce some electricity. It was constructed in response to the devastating Christmas Flood of 1964 and was finished in 1977.
