π May is Mental Health Awareness Month. On this final day of May, we pause to recognize and honor our Green Star Families. πΊπΈ
The Green Star is a symbolic initiative dedicated to recognizing and honoring military families who have lost a veteran or service member to su***de.
While most Americans are familiar with the Blue Star (families of active-duty service members) and the Gold Star (families of those killed in combat), the Green Star was created to address a critical gap in national military recognition.
The deep meaning behind the Green Star includes several core components:
πΊπΈ Honoring the "Invisible Wounds of War": It acknowledges that the battles of military service do not always end on the physical battlefield. Many veterans face severe post-traumatic stress (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries, and mental health struggles that follow them long after the uniform comes off.
πEnding Silence and Stigma: Historically, su***de loss within the military community has faced painful social stigmas. The Green Star provides families with a safe, proud way to recognize their loved one's honorable service without hiding the reality of how they passed.
π"One Mark for the Missing": Grassroots efforts led by advocacy organizations like Green Star Families of America encourage supporters to place a small green mark (such as green tape, ribbon, or a painted tip) on their American flag displays. This acts as a quiet, respectful reminder that these families should not feel invisible.
πLegislative Recognition: Bipartisan federal legislation, such as the Sgt. Walter F. Hartnett IV Green Star Veterans Service Act, has been introduced to officially direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish a formal Green Star service flag and expand counseling benefits for surviving next-of-kin.

Remember the reason for Memorial Day. This weekend, and everyday, we honor members of the Military who have given their life in battle. Some were lost in the killing sands of Iraq or the mountains of Afghanistan. Some are members of older generations where blood was spilt and our men and women died during World War II, Korea or Vietnam.
And there are others who took their lives during the continued mental health battles here at home. So, during this weekend while you are grilling or enjoying your time with family and friends, Remember them all!
You're invited to ride with VFW Motorcycle Group Unit 19 to the Memorial Day service in Benbrook, TX. Meet at 1000 Steven's Drive by 7:15 AM for a 7:40 KSU.
