The dojo is open!

The dojo is closed today. We just can’t risk folks driving in the snow. It’s absolutely dumping right now. ❄️

Keeping an eye on the snow! If it starts getting worse, we will close.

****Not Done Yet****
**More Lower Elevation Snow**

A chilly morning as we sit in a break between storms. Temperatures this morning are in the upper 20s across the mid-foothills. It’s 17 degrees this morning in Truckee. Roads are icy throughout Nevada County. And we still have widespread power outages in the county with about 5000 customers without power. I80 is still closed. The Sierra Snow Lab near Donner Summit has picked up 69 inches of snow since the storm cycle began.

We also have an evolving national news story in Nevada County where an avalanche incident occurred just north of the Donner Summit area. According to news sources, 15 individuals were returning to the trailhead from a 3-night excursion to the Frog Lake Huts, located just northeast of Castle Peak. Six of those individuals were able to contact authorities yesterday morning reporting the avalanche. Nevada County Search and Rescue was able to reach them last night and get them back to the trailhead. Two were transported to the hospital. Nine members of the party are missing and currently unaccounted for while SAR continues the search.

The system that moved through yesterday is on its way to the east and is bringing some much-needed snow to eastern Nevada and Utah. You can see the cold air in the Eastern Pacific in the satellite image below by the “popcorn” appearance of the cloud cover. Today will be mostly dry with a few scattered showers. Snow levels 2000-3000 with little to no additional accumulations.

Another area of low pressure will move inland tonight over the Bay Area and then continue to track east through the region Thursday morning. This will bring more cold air, and we could see some light snow down to 1000 with another round of accumulating snow in most of Nevada County. Snow will taper off late morning into early Thursday afternoon. Conditions will be dry Friday and Saturday.

So….yep, another round of accumulating snow for the foothills tonight and tomorrow morning. Snowfall amounts will be similar and maybe a little bit lighter than the last storm with 5-8 inches in town. Here is my snow forecast through Thursday from the incoming storm:

Auburn: dusting to 1-2 inches (could see a dusting down to Newcastle)
Penn Valley: 1-3 inches
Grass Valley/Nevada City: 4-8 inches
Upper Foothills: 8-14 inches
Donner Summit: up to 2 feet

Stay warm, stay tuned!!
