Aikido and emotional intelligence 11/23/2025

I had the great pleasure and honor of speaking with Jon Di Luca, host of the podcast, Ki to the City.

Aikido and emotional intelligence W/ Susan Dutton Sensei

We were very pleased to support our dear friend, Erwin Lares Sensei, in the opening of his dojo near Janesville, WI. It is always great to connect with our larger Aikido family.

Gratitude beyond words.
Our Grand Opening Seminar brought together aikidoka from near and far — a celebration of community, movement, and spirit.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, helped prepare the space, and filled the dojo with such warmth and energy. This is just the beginning. ✨

🥋 In aiki,

Dutton Sensei’s Ten Commandments of Ukewaza

1. Thou shalt love thy face and avoid contact between it and nage at all times.
2. Thou shalt guard thy face with thy free hand, shouldst thou have one.
3. Thou shalt continue attacking until forced to fall down.
4. Thou shalt keep thy wrist, arms, and shoulders relaxed throughout the technique.
5. Thou shalt fall to the mat as softly as a babe of three.
6. Thou shalt make no angles with thy elbows during mae ukemi, but constrain thine arms to a gentle curve.
7. Thou shalt tap out before thou feelest much pain during pins and joint locks.
8. Thou shalt not force nage to drag you through the technique by being a rigid, unmoving buffoon.
9. Thou shalt not fall before becoming fully unbalanced.
10. Thou shalt immediately tap out the moment thou feelest pain in thy flesh.
