Uke-waza, or "receptions", are versatile techniques that are both defensive and offensive in nature. They are used to receive the opponent and capture the advantage. Here is an example of how a mid-level reception can be used to close the distance and enter grappling range.

Memorization and repetition of a form, like this version of Kusanku Kata, has many benefits, but it is only the first phase of kata training. What do the movements actually mean? We limit the value of our kata training if we don't put the effort into figuring this out.

It's both an honor and a privilege to share the mat with these guys. Each one lives in a different city. They travel anywhere from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours to the dojo. What an awesome community to be surrounded by!
