They think they’re safe in the shell. They’re not. 🐢
Great energy on the mats tonight! As you can see our no-gi crew is hard at work drilling, rolling, and hunting for the back.
One of the most stubborn defensive positions in grappling is the turtle. When an opponent turtles up, they are shutting down your passing game—but they are also handing you the roadmap to their back. You just have to know how to break their structure.
Here is how we’re cracking the shell:
🔥 Make Them Carry You: Never let them rest. Apply heavy, driving chest pressure to make every breath a chore.
🔥 Control the Hips & Shoulders: A tight seatbelt grip paired with heavy hip pressure kills their ability to scramble or roll out.
🔥 Create the Openings: Don't force the hooks. Threaten the front headlock, look for the crucifix, or use a spiral ride to force them to open up and give you the space you need.
The turtle isn't a stalling position—it's an opportunity waiting to be taken.
What is your absolute go-to attack when an opponent turtles up? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Drillers Make Killers.
It’s a cliché in the gym and on the mats, but it’s rooted in cold, hard neurology. When you drill a movement hundreds or thousands of times, you aren't just sweating—you are literally rewiring your nervous system.
Here is exactly what happens when you commit to the grind:
You Build the Superhighway: Every perfect repetition builds myelin, an insulating layer around your nerves that allows electrical signals to travel faster. You are turning a dirt road into an information superhighway.
True "Muscle Memory": Gross motor skills shift from the prefrontal cortex (where you actively think about them) to the basal ganglia (the brain's automatic pilot). The movement becomes a deeply ingrained reflex.
Zero Hesitation: In a high-stress environment, your cognitive load spikes and fine motor skills degrade. If you have to think about your next move, you’re already too late. Drilling removes the thought process entirely. Your body just does.
"Under pressure, you don't rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training."
Stop looking for the flashy shortcuts and secret techniques. The secret is the repetition.
Amateurs practice until they get it right.
Professionals drill until they can't get it wrong.
Put in the reps.

It's always awesome to see family sharing the mats. Nothing builds a bond quite like trying to smash each other's guards.
Another great night at Tuesday fundamentals, we'd like to welcome Eric and Emily to the mats as well!
Want to know what all the fuss is about? Join us today at 10a or 530p for our Adults Gi, and stay for our Competition class at 630.

Tonight’s Fundamentals Crew
We took a blocked hip bump and ran with it, showing that the best Jitsu isn't always about being the fastest or the most explosive. It’s about that slow, controlled pressure that gives them absolutely nowhere to go.
Love watching this room get better every single week.

The best guards don't work in isolation—they work in systems.
Tonight’s class was a lesson in fluidity. We focused on the constant chain of attacks, drilling the transitions from Single Leg X to Butterfly, and finishing deep in X Guard.
When we learn Jiu-Jitsu, we aren't just memorizing isolated techniques like single words; we are learning how to string them together into complete sentences.
Tonight was all about fluency—learning how to switch hooks, manage space, and off-balance effortlessly so your movement flows naturally from one thought to the next.
Phenomenal energy and ex*****on on the mats tonight! 🥋💪

Stepping onto an IBJJF mat is about far more than chasing gold, it is a different kind of beast. It takes immense courage just to sign your name, make the weight, and walk out under those lights. It’s the ultimate test of your technique, your composure, and your dedication to the gentle art.
This weekend, 4 of our competitors stepped into the arena and put their Jiu-Jitsu on display with incredible heart and class.
Huge congratulations to our warriors who fought through tough, technical brackets to bring home 2nd and 3rd place finishes at the IBJJF NC Open!
But beyond the podium, the real victory of the weekend was seeing the expression of our Jiu-Jitsu. Win, lose, or draw, every single match offered invaluable lessons that can only be found under that kind of pressure.
We are proud of:
✔️ The sharp technique and grace under fire shown by every single competitor.
✔️ The willingness to test the details we work so hard on every day in the academy.
✔️ The undeniable bond of our team, cheering mat-side and holding the line together.
Jiu-Jitsu is a lifelong journey of self-refinement. Every tournament is just a snapshot of where we are today and a roadmap for where we are going tomorrow. We don't lose; we learn, we adapt, and we refine the art.
Incredibly proud of the entire team. Let’s rest up, look at the details, and get back to the mats to keep building.

There is nothing quite like looking around the room and seeing a sea of fresh tape wrapped around everyone's belts.
Tonight was a big night on the mats, and I am incredibly proud to say that the hard work is paying off!
Every single stripe on that mat was earned, never given. It represents hours of sweat, endless rounds, and a room full of people showing up to push each other to be better every single day. You don't get through the grind alone; you get through it because of the teammates who smash you, coach you, and refuse to let you quit.
Huge shoutout to our coaches for the guidance and to the best team for always bringing the heat.
This journey is a marathon, and there’s no better crew to run it with.
Time to get back to work and dirty up that new tape. Oss. 💜🥋
