We’ve been teaching dance to students for over 45 years and during that time many things have changed, yet some remain the same. Dance has become much more competitive in the past decade, and while the competitions are harder, the tricks are flashier, and the beats are faster, having great technique remains the most important aspect of dance.
Sure, nowadays we have 5-year old’s doing back handsprings and side aerials. Years past those tricks were reserved for 14-18-year old’s. Sure, the music is changing and you hear the same songs 3, 4, and 5 times at competitions. Yes, more studios have sprung up and are solely focused on winning competitions in the dance mom’s era. Those things are all true, but the need for strong technique remains a constant.
