Team Backwoods Gun Dogs got it done today with 2 different bears. Both packs are absolutely on fire. There is a reason we go 100% on our hound hunts year after year. The secret is in the bloodline of the dogs and the training. Henry W***y and his dogs caught this feisty bear on the ground today. These hounds are bred for this and absolutely love it!!

We have an opening for week 3 9/28/26-10/2/2026 of Maine hound season. This will be a 1 on 1 hunt with a guide and a guaranteed shot opportunity. Price is $3,000 and includes lodging, transportation during the hunt, over 20 active bait sites to check every morning, well trained hounds, trophy and meat care. Hunt will take place in the greater Greenville area. First $500 deposit will hold this hunt.

Backwoods Gun Dogs has donated another bear hunt with hounds to Moose Maine Kids. We have donated many hunts over the years to nonprofit organizations. All hunters from these hunts have been successful at harvesting a bear with us. We will be there tonight at the Banquet in Mt. Vernon Maine. Tickets may still be available for the event. Luciano got a nice bear today. It was a long cold trail by Rooster, Arty, Hilda and Tig. Once it was jumped a short battle ensued and this bear was up a tree. Luciano made an excellent shot and we winched it 400 yards to the truck.

Yesterday the dogs caught a 200Lb or so bear under a rock that we let go to grow.

Today Kojack owned by Henry gave great testimony to his blood line when he took an older track on a dry day and treed this beautiful bear solo. He ran it for over 2 hours never crossing a road he evan swam a couple islands. Congrats Ryan on a nice bear!

This 160 # boar loved the Mtns and gave the dogs a good run. Rooster, Arty and Tig had this bear bayed under a large boulder at the peak of a Mtn. Jaret from Moose Maine Kids is working towards his Maine grand slam and is the first client I have ever taken up a Mtn that wasnt out of breath at any point. As we got to the rock the bear was bayed under he bolted. Dogs and bear tore down the Mtn. It always amazes me to see how fast the dogs and bear can run across terrain we can barely traverse. It wasn’t long before the dogs were showing treed. But on the top of the next Mtn over 🤦🏻. We hiked back down the Mtn we were on and drove around to get closer to our next hike.

Hike 2 was only 680 yards from the truck but it was no walk in the park either. We made it up to the dogs and this time the bear was in a tree. Henry and I got the dogs tied back and Jaret made an excellent shot. Where it was a hot day we decided quartering the bear in the woods was the best way to ensure there was no spoilage.

As a Houndsman I think it is really important to introduce young people to our wonderful world of hounding. This will help preserve our heritage.

What a day at Backwoods Gun Dogs!! We have harvested a new state record sow. Previous record was 358. This bear on an official scale at Indian Hill is 404LBS! Bear was shot by David Edgcomb. Weight and s*x was certified by a Biologist at the Greenville location. Arty, Rooster, Tig, Hilda and Raya were on the bear walking and baying for 4 hours. Some injuries to the dogs but nothing serious.
