Craig Campbell ticked off another big one-day race with an explosive attack in the final kilometer to take age group victory and third overall at Southeast Gravel's The Gravel Battle of Sumter Forest 2021 Short Course.

The Orange Bee made his initial race-winning move in the closing kilometers to drag the rest of the front group into the final ditch, before riding the last of his rivals off his wheel as he powered up to the Clinton House, punching the air in victory.

At the back of the front group, Jeff Jordan looked composed heading into the ditch, expecting chaos that did not occur. Marking other riders headed towards the finish, he couldn’t match their power after his earlier chase back to the front group after going down at the beginning of the final sector of gravel.

Rob Flemen came in a few minutes later successfully completing the course this time.

With riders from FreeHub Racing, Sweet Sippin' Sports, Every Woman Cycling Team, Piedmont Cycling Team, Whitetail Bicycles & Coffee Shop, Cycle Haus, Greenville Spinners Racing Team, and others; the race started with a quick tempo, as the first sector of gravel launched the mechanics into a whirlwind of activity. The first major decision came on a fast downhill, as the rider's nerves were tested on the dusty, loose course. Meanwhile, Flemen chose to let discretion be the better part of valor and safely descended the loose stone.

After a tarmac climb, the group went back into the second section of gravel where Jordan turned his camera off and attacked. Thinking he had recorded the searing change of pace, he sat up and turned the camera back on as the group came back together. He needs some kind of on/off light.

Another tarmac climb saw Freehub send a rider up the road hoping to coax another clear. However, he was set free and dangled off the front for the next sector of gravel as the group barreled toward the infamous water crossing. Up the steep gravel pitch and back onto tarmac, a flurry of attacks came to nothing as the right turn onto the final sector of gravel was in sight.

The pace crept back up on the approach to the final sector at Ridge Road, riders jostling for position with just over 9km to go, the neutral service car being pulled out as the gap kept tumbling.

With the pack of about 30 riders avoiding the craters on the double track “road”, Jeff got 2mm too close to the pine straw lined ditch as was soon on the ground. After a five minute chase only to be dropped again, he finally made solid contact with the bunch as the gravel ended.

This setup the spectacular ending climb to the Clinton House where Thomas Creek Brewery was a reward for all.

My son has recently started a new mountain biking group called Palmetto Upstate Mountain Biking Kids. Most kids feel intimidated trying to keep up with adults on rides so this is all about them. The group is too let kids meet new friends, learn, be safe, and most of all... have fun without feeling intimidated. All rides are "nobody left behind. " We've been riding Southside in Spartanburg. Other trails are always open to ride if there is a leader. Hopefully there are a few parents that would be up for leading a short ride once in a while. Here's the link to the group:
