DCG Trap Team Rookie Harrison Stone of Dallas Center placed First in the Iowa SCTP State Championships in 5 Stand for the Rookie age group (4th and 5th grades) held at Cedar Falls Gun Club June 25-27. His score of 65 was also better than all but two 6-8th grade first year shooters (Intermediate Entry age classification).

This was the inaugural season for the 5 stand discipline for Iowa SCTP, which is a stadium version of Sporting Clays. Athletes shoot two rounds of 10 targets thrown in pairs from 5 shooting stations. The targets are thrown from 8 machines positioned to throw various target presentations, from rabbits to chandelles.

Harrison only began learning and practicing Clay Target shooting in late March at our practice range at Raccoon Valley Sportsmans Club, beginning with Trap Singles. He began learning and practicing 5 stand in early May at our other practice range at Olofson Shooting Range west of Polk City. Thanks to the management and staff at Olofson for providing a 5 stand field and thanks to Ryan Oliver for helping Harrison learn the discipline. Harrison’s dad, Doug, personally supported Harrison at every practice, a requirement for athletes younger than the 6th grade.

Harrison has also begun to shoot s***t at Olofson and plans to compete in all disciplines next season.

The Dallas Center Grimes Trap Team is not associated with the DCG school system. Any youth residing in western Polk County or all of Dallas County can join the team as Olofson is their closest range. We plan to practice several times per week in September and October. Fall is the ideal time to onboard new athletes and to learn new disciplines. Harrison is DCG Trap Team’s second state championship competition medal this year. Ty Crabtree placed 3rd in Trap Singles in the Senior JV classification, which is all first year high school athletes. Like Harrison, Ty began shooting clay targets in late March.

Ty Crabtree placed 3rd of 472 Senior JV athletes in the Iowa SCTP State Trap Shooting Championships!

Senior JV is all high school athletes shooting for their first season. Ty began his Clay Target shooting career April 1 of 2026 when he joined DCG Trap Team. He has attended almost every practice and every competition this season. His scores have steadily improved. His six best competition scores during the season placed him 22 of 624 JV athletes that competed in league competitions across the state.

We’re proud of Ty’s results and his hard work and commitment. He has shot more rounds this season than any of our team members and it payed off. Hugh thank you to Jon Mead for his expertise. DCG Trap Team is so fortunate to have Jon’s trap shooting knowledge at the highest level. Very few teams have that level of expertise available to teach their athletes to shoot trap at that level.

In the morning session, Ty started with three rounds of 25 straight followed by a 24 for a total of 99. In the afternoon session, he started with a 25, followed by 3 rounds of 24 for a total of 97.

196 placed Ty in a 4 way tie for 2nd place Senior JV. The shoot off Sunday afternoon began with a round of 25 targets from the 16 yard line. One athlete shot 24 and Ty tied with the others with 22. The shoot off continued between Ty and the remaining two athletes with 25 targets shot from the 22 yard line. It was pretty clear Ty had more experience and confidence shooting Handicap than the other two athletes. He broke 24 vs 20 and 18 for the others to secure 3rd place.

Congratulations to Ty and the whole DCG team. We had several DCG athletes shoot season best last week. I overheard lots of people asking “DCG, are they new?” With the growth and resources of Dallas County, the support of Raccoon Valley Sportsmans Club and Olofson Shooting Range, high level coaches Jon Mead and Ryan Oliver for
S***t and Sporting Clays and the active committed support of our parents, DCG has the potential to be a very competitive program going forward.

We’re planning to practice all disciplines and onboard new athletes in September and October. The SCTP league season begins September 1.

Eight DCG and 3 Clay Crusher athletes and their parents traveled to High Lakes Outdoor Alliance to compete in multiple disciplines last Saturday. It was the best shooting conditions I’ve ever seen there. Sunshine and almost no wind. Here are highlights:

Trap Singles:

Ty placed first of 22 Senior JV with a 47, including another 25 straight!

Wyatt placed 9th overall of 51 Intermediate athletes with a 43.

Jeffery placed 12th overall of 51 Intermediate athletes and tied for first of 25 Intermediate Entry (IE) athletes. Jeffery continues to improve his scores every weekend.

Roman placed 19th overall and 7th of 25 IE with 42.

Harrison placed first of 2 Rookies with 23.

Trap Handicap
Ty placed 4th of 10 Senior JV with 35

Wyatt placed 1st of 20 Intermediate athletes with a 44! That’s higher than the first place Senior JV. Wyatt loves Handicap.

Trap Doubles
Ty placed 2nd of 8 Senior JV with a 41.

Wyatt placed 4th of 16 Intermediate with 39

5 stand
Ty placed 2nd of 5 Senior JV with 37

Wyatt placed 4th of 13 Intermediate athletes with a 37

Roman placed 11th overall of 13 Intermediate and he was the only Entry level. Congratulations to Roman for pushing to expand his Clay Target shooting.

S***t
Wyatt placed 5th of 15 Intermediate athletes with 41. Not bad for the 4th time shooting s***t.

In trap singles, we continue to be very competitive and continue to improve. I’m happy to have athletes trying all disciplines, even though we haven’t had much practice time on them. Even with minimal practice time, we’re very competitive in the other disciplines.

Note: Dallas Center-Grimes Trap Team is a private SCTP club and not affiliated with the school system. Anyone local is welcome to join. Local defined as Des Moines NW metro area and most of Dallas County. Recruiting for the 26-27 season will begin September 1. We anticipate offering practice at least twice per week in September and October. Fall is the ideal time for on boarding new athletes. If you’re interested, please message us.

We haven’t had a shooter introduction lately, so everyone meet Keegan Houser! 🎯

Keegan is a first-year, 6th grade trap team member who already shows a lot of determination and drive. He loves getting outside to shoot, and in his spare time he even started his own lawn mowing business this year.

With that kind of work ethic and motivation, we’re excited to see where this sport can take him — or where he can take the sport. 👏🎯

Trap Team Tuesday 🎯

Meet teammate Cael Bushnell! This is Cael’s first year on the trap team, but he’s been shooting with his family for years. His experience shows, and he’s a great addition to the team.

Cael loves being outdoors, which is one of the reasons he enjoys the sport so much. 🌿🎯

We’re glad to have you on the team, Cael! 👏
