DCG Trap Team Rookie Harrison Stone of Dallas Center placed First in the Iowa SCTP State Championships in 5 Stand for the Rookie age group (4th and 5th grades) held at Cedar Falls Gun Club June 25-27. His score of 65 was also better than all but two 6-8th grade first year shooters (Intermediate Entry age classification).
This was the inaugural season for the 5 stand discipline for Iowa SCTP, which is a stadium version of Sporting Clays. Athletes shoot two rounds of 10 targets thrown in pairs from 5 shooting stations. The targets are thrown from 8 machines positioned to throw various target presentations, from rabbits to chandelles.
Harrison only began learning and practicing Clay Target shooting in late March at our practice range at Raccoon Valley Sportsmans Club, beginning with Trap Singles. He began learning and practicing 5 stand in early May at our other practice range at Olofson Shooting Range west of Polk City. Thanks to the management and staff at Olofson for providing a 5 stand field and thanks to Ryan Oliver for helping Harrison learn the discipline. Harrison’s dad, Doug, personally supported Harrison at every practice, a requirement for athletes younger than the 6th grade.
Harrison has also begun to shoot s***t at Olofson and plans to compete in all disciplines next season.
The Dallas Center Grimes Trap Team is not associated with the DCG school system. Any youth residing in western Polk County or all of Dallas County can join the team as Olofson is their closest range. We plan to practice several times per week in September and October. Fall is the ideal time to onboard new athletes and to learn new disciplines. Harrison is DCG Trap Team’s second state championship competition medal this year. Ty Crabtree placed 3rd in Trap Singles in the Senior JV classification, which is all first year high school athletes. Like Harrison, Ty began shooting clay targets in late March.
