Big Ranger lowers track record again at Scioto

For his second start in a row, Big Ranger lowered the Eldorado Scioto Downs track record for 3-year-old c**t trotters – this time tripping the beam in 1:50.3. The win was in the second $75,000 division of the Ohio Sires Stakes.

Tim Tetrick got the call on Big Ranger after switching to the Anette Lorentzon barn after his last start. The pair got away third off the car from post three, but with a breaker, settled in for the pocket trip going to the 26.3 opening quarter. Just before the :56 half, Tetrick pulled Big Ranger, and the pair sprinted away from the field by the 1:22.4 third-quarter. Big Ranger won by six lengths over Tom Largo (Chris Lems); Rose Run Boom (Luke Hanners) was third.

Big Ranger is owned by Madison Global and now has three wins in five seasonal starts. The $25,000 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Spring Haven Farm is by In Range out of the Tactical Landing mare Big Blue Bird.

The first OSS division went to Soulful Saul and Hanners in 1:53.3. The pair went straight to the top and led through fractions of :28, :7.3 and 1:25 before winning by two and three-quarters over K**b Creek Moni (Trevor Smith), with Water Slide (Brett Miller) finishing third. It was the first seasonal victory out of four starts for the son of Ready For Moni out of the Tom Ridge mare Celebrity Obsesion. Trained by Steve Carter for Jay Mossbarger, Peggy Carter, and Philip Skinner, Soulful Saul now has $142,309 in lifetime earnings.

Saturday’s card also hosted the $30,000 Jerry Knappenberger final for non-winners of one c**t pacers. Sunnys In The Sea turned a perfect pocket trip into victory to cross the line first in 1:52. Driven by Tyler Smith for co-owner and trainer Ron Steck, Bootville Stables, and Jeffrey Breece, the Downbytheseaside gelding won by a neck over Eddie Nine Toes (Miller).

Filly pacers were on display Friday (June 12) at Eldorado Scioto Downs as two more $30,000 series finals were held in the Steve McCoy and Skip Hoovler events for NW1 and NW2 fillies, respectively.

The Steve McCoy, for those that were non-winners of one, was oversubscribed in the two legs leading to Friday’s final, with four divisions each week. All the winners were back for the final and it was Sea Me and Luke Hanners who prevailed in 1:51.3 over stablemate Zooom Call (Chris Page). Setting fractions of 27.1 and 55.4 before being challenged going down the backside by Estuary (Marvin Luna), Sea Me fought back at the 1:22.4 third-quarter to win by a neck.

Co-owned by trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. , Let It Ride Stables, and Odds On Racing, Sea Me is now three for four lifetime with $31,500 earned. The Downbytheseaside filly is out of the Bettor’s Delight mare Single Me and was unraced at 2.

Rodeo Dancer swept the Skip Hoovler for non-winners of two pacers, winning in 1:50.2 with Brett Miller at the lines for trainer Steve Bauder. Leaving from post five, Miller looked to keep rolling through the opening quarter but took a brief seat as the field went around the first turn. Shortly after the 26.1 opening quarter, Rodeo Dancer rolled up to take the lead and tripped the beam at the 53.2 half and 1:22 third-quarter. Laude Da (Page) came three-wide but could only get within four and a quarter lengths of the race winner.

Rodeo Dancer is by Rodeo Romeo out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Parts Unknown. Owned and bred by Oompas Farm and Robert Mondillo, the 3-year-old filly now has four wins in 12 lifetime starts and $104,200 in earnings.
