Grandmaster Munyon’s Mentorship Moment:
During a fight DO NOT RUN!
Many instructors and parents tell their children or students that if given the chance, run away.
This advice can betray you.
Let me explain with three reasons why this is bad advice.
1. By running away, you and others are suggesting you can outrun your opponent. Well, this is such a gamble. Many of us might have body parts that won’t allow us to run from danger.
-Bad knees
-Bad ankles
-Bad cardio
If and when they catch up to you, most likely you’ll be in pain or out of breath (energy) to fight back.
2. What if you’re with other people?
-Family
-Friends
Are you going to leave them behind?
3. Your environment could betray you.
If you’re running away and there’s snow or ice on the ground, you might slip and fall causing injury.
There might be too many buildings and obstacles that could hinder your escape.
Your attire might not allow you to move at your maximum speed. Examples include wearing inappropriate footwear such as flip flops, high heels and etc
Don’t run! You’ll only die tired!
De-escalate if possible. Fight if you must but ensure that if you run, you may not get the results you wanted.
