We Are The World — USA for Africa

On this day in 1985, "We Are The World" began a three-week run at the top of the American charts — a remarkable achievement for a song that was never really about commerce in the first place. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones, the track was recorded in a single overnight session on January 28, 1985, right after the American Music Awards — a logistical feat that involved gathering 45 of the biggest names in music under one roof, from Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder to Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner. 🥁
The context matters. The song was a direct response to the catastrophic famine devastating Ethiopia, inspired in part by the success of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" released a few months earlier in the UK. Harry Belafonte was the driving force behind bringing the American music industry together for a similar cause, and the result was something that transcended charity — it became a genuine cultural moment. Quincy Jones famously hung a sign at the studio entrance that read "Check your egos at the door," and somehow, it worked. 🎧
The single raised over 60 million dollars for famine relief in Africa, but its impact went beyond fundraising. It cemented the idea that popular music could be a vehicle for large-scale humanitarian action, paving the way for events like Live Aid later that same year. The music video, showing each artist recording their part, became an intimate document of an era when pop, rock, soul, and country could still share the same room without it feeling forced. 🎸
Forty years on, "We Are The World" remains one of the best-selling singles in history — and a reminder of what the industry looks like when it decides, even briefly, to look outward.🎼🎤🎷🎹🎸 05/11/2026

In the words of John F. Kennedy, Jr., “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.” We must learn to wage peace as effectively as we now wage war.🙏

Meditation is not about controlling your thoughts; it’s about witnessing them. Your mind will wander, and that’s normal. The practice is in noticing when this happens and gently guiding your attention back to the present moment, to your breath.
As you breathe, you may feel sensations in your chest, belly, or nostrils. When your mind drifts into planning, worrying, or remembering, gently bring your focus back to the breath. This simple act of returning is the essence of meditation, helping you stay grounded.

Meditation isn’t a luxury during chaotic times; it’s a necessity. It's not about escaping stress or forcing yourself into blissful calm. Meditation is about meeting yourself exactly where you are, accepting whatever you’re feeling, and witnessing it without judgment.
