Alaska Cross Country Guiding Guided hunts for Mountain Goats, Brown Bears & Black Bears.

07/16/2023

Since retiring from 32 years of outfitting and guiding hunts for bears and Mt. Goats near Haines, Ak, I recently completed and self-published my memoir, OUR JOURNEYS. For those new to this site and my past, please scroll through some of the older posts on this page. If you are interested in reading about twice defending against three simultaneously attacking brown bears and sleeping inside a valley-floor glacier ice cave when trapping the world's largest wolverines, first Google my name and then storiesofthenorth.com. The website intro will also inform you of my time as a 20-year-old Air Force assistant Crew Chief of an F-4 Phantom Fighter/Bomber. It was armed with a 340-kiloton nuke on a 5-minute alert to vaporize portions of Red China from our covert Quick Response Alert site at Tainan Air Base, Taiwan, 1970. In all honesty, we nearly accidentally sent two of those deadly warbirds on what would have been the world's first unprovoked and most catastrophic nuclear attack in history. After I stopped the launch in the final second, the Air Force took measures to protect the officers that caused the incident, including scrubbing my involvement and presence. The only record is my memoir, published solely to illuminate one of the darkest days in modern military history. Because of how things are with China, Russia, and North Korea, the world must know how close we came to a nuclear holocaust in 1970. Please assist in spreading the word before it happens again when there might not be anyone willing to go against protocol when an obvious mistake is made by those in charge of Planet Earth's fate.

After 32 years of outfitting for and guiding Brown Bear and Mountain Goat hunts near Haines Alaska, I have retired. I am now creating a new website related to my passion, writing, while self-publishing on storiesofthenorth.com. I am also involved with the White Water Gold TV series, now airing on the Discovery Channel. I sold two virgin gold claims to Dustin Hurt, the show's star, but I retained the two most valuable, virgin "bench" gold claims, which are more easily mined than inside the Nugget Creek Chasm. To learn more about my past, including why the Veteran's Administration recently awarded me a 100% PTSD disability rating after I stopped an unsanctioned nuclear launch at Tainan Air Base in Taiwan in 1970. Please go to storiesofthenorth.com. It is a developing website that needs a lot of work. Still, you can read two exciting excerpts from my memoir, OUR JOURNEYS, to be available on Kindle after I am featured in an upcoming episode of White Water Gold.

Sometimes the raw beauty of the winter landscape is more than enough to keep us motivated through the long, cold nights of a winter hunt.

Our last hunt of 2019 was a fantastic winter expedition. Anton from Alberta came well prepared with proper gear and an ever-positive no-quit attitude, and on the 7th day he was able to connect on a fantastic billy! Much thanks to our packer and all-around helpful hunting hand .

Isaac guided John from NH to this fine billy during a wintery December hunt. Congrats John!

Woodie from Mississippi was delayed a day by weather, so he was eager to get to hunting. Within 2 hours of the first night out we had seen 13 bears, and he liked the looks of this boar. An hour or so of cat and mouse came to an end when Woodie’s rifle interrupted the crisp, cold night. Congrats Woodie!

What a fun hunt with Marc from MT! After a couple days battling low clouds/minimal visibility trying to glass from the river bottom we decided to spike out up on the mountain. We were greeted with heavy fog and more rain which kept us cooped up in the tent for about 42 hours. Finally we had a gap in the weather and made the most of it as Marc suited-up to close in on this nice billy!

Here is a very common sight when hunting with ACCG, especially during fall brown bear hunts!

The slow motion shot of Brad’s billy from a few weeks back. We were very happy he made a great shot as it was already a long uphill packout. Had the billy flipped off his ledge it may have added 3-400 more feet to the already 1000’ climb!
