These boys made it in to labor on Labor Day - for most, it was their first exposure to hip escapes and double leg take downs. Their curiosity, attentiveness, and hard work paid off fast!

If you or your child is curious to learn what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about and you’re in the Marion County/Hamilton, AL area, I invite you to come try it out for a week at no cost.

Here is a question a parent asked me today:

“Would my son learning martial arts help him on the wrestling team?”

The short answer is…

Absolutely.

As someone who has coached both youth wrestlers and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students for many years, I’ve seen the two complement each other extremely well.

But here’s what I’d tell any parent whose child is just getting started.

First, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are both outstanding activities. Neither is “better.” They simply have different goals.

Wrestling focuses on takedowns, control, escapes, and pins. It’s fast-paced, physically demanding, and one of the toughest sports a young person can participate in.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also teaches takedowns and control, but it goes further by teaching submissions and a much broader range of positions and strategies. It emphasizes technique, leverage, timing, and problem-solving just as much as athleticism.

The two arts make each other better.

Many successful wrestlers train jiu jitsu during the offseason to keep their grappling skills sharp. Likewise, wrestlers who transition into jiu jitsu often find that their wrestling gives them an immediate advantage.

One thing parents should know is this:

If your child hasn’t tried either activity yet, you don’t yet know which one they’ll enjoy more.

Some kids thrive in the fast pace and intensity of wrestling.

Others discover they love the strategic, puzzle-solving nature of jiu jitsu.

Many end up loving both.

Another difference is that wrestling is generally seasonal through schools, while jiu jitsu is something people can train for years or even decades. Some students compete regularly. Others never compete at all and simply enjoy learning a practical skill, staying active, and building confidence.

Wrestling also offers opportunities that jiu jitsu generally doesn’t, such as middle school, high school, and college competition, including scholarships.

No matter which path your child chooses, they’ll likely gain discipline, confidence, resilience, humility, work ethic, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Those lessons last much longer than any medal or trophy.

If your child is interested in learning to grapple, I’d encourage you to explore both. Visit practices. Ask questions. Let them experience each environment. Sometimes the best way to know what fits is to step on the mat.

And if you’d like your child to experience Brazilian Jiu Jitsu firsthand, we’d love to have them join us for a free week at SJJ Hamilton.

I sincerely mean this - I've said it before today and this will make it the second time I'm saying it today - I want to see Hamilton training jiu jitsu. I don't care where you go to learn it, so long as you at least give it a try. Find an academy that you like and train!

I'm flattered that our neighbor academy Origins Jiu Jitsu, which has been around here a lot longer than I have been in this town, has followed SJJ's lead in offering anyone a free week to train and try it out.

I have no doubt that between my 24 years on the mats and Prof Booth's 16 years in Hamilton, you will find that one of our academies suits you.

What it means is that you can have TWO free weeks between the two of us! How awesome is that?!?!
