Dear ORCS players:
Many players received a letter earlier this year from the administrative board of another local game, Legend. The letter reminded everyone about past bullying and toxic actions taken by Legend players; it attempted to exonerate Legend with arguments that these actions over the last ten years did not represent its current leadership or its players. If you have questions about these incidents, please feel free to ask a noble.
Shortly this letter was sent out, ORCS Executive Board was notified that Legend has a public ban list in its bylaws, which included the deadname of an ORCS player. Legend updated its ban list when the player’s legal name changed, but still included the deadname in addition to the new legal name.
Deadnaming is transphobic, bullying behavior and is considered sexual harassment.
Our EB brought the issue to the attention of Legend’s board. Legend’s board explained that the deadname had been left in the bylaws ban when the legal name had been added by majority vote of the entire club, and the deadname could not be removed without a majority vote of the entire club. Legend’s board stated they would recommend alternative language that removed the deadname.
This spring, the majority of Legend voted to change the language again of the bylaws ban, but still included the deadname. Given the opportunity to prove that their community was not represented by a prior legion of bad actors, Legend responded by doubling down organizationally on every level - in its bylaws, in its leadership, in its broader community that majority voted to further enshrine bullying and sexual harassment in its governing document.
ORCS Noble Council and Executive Board unequivocally condemns transphobia in the larger LARP community. Transphobia is not compatible with our safety culture. Sexual harassment is not compatible with our safety culture. We recommend that when and if our players decide to cross-game, they do so in larping communities that treat LGBTQ players with respect.

“Whispers in the wind bring you news of strange nautical happenings. The Infamous Pirate BriarRose, long a scourge upon every nation, has mysteriously vanished, along with her crew and her ship full of ill-gotten gains. Drunken sailors mutter that the area in which she was lost has experienced strange weather phenomena, water spouts, Kraken sightings, and terrifying sea creatures.
You have hired a ship and set out to see whether BriarRose has finally met her doom, and if so, where her treasure might lie.”
