People often ask me, "Why do you volunteer so much?" "Why do you do it?" and "What do you get out of it?"

My first response is always, "It's not about me." I am truly not expecting anything in return.

Volunteering is simply the act of freely giving your time and labor to support a community, organization, or individual. It is a conscious, personal choice to dedicate your energy to a meaningful cause that extends far beyond your own household.

Because volunteering is a choice, it can sometimes feel like a thankless job. That is exactly why I go into it without any expectation of receiving thanks, praise, or recognition. My motivation is simply to support the little league: the youth athletes who come out to learn baseball and softball, the parents who dedicate their time and money to let their children participate, and our community as a whole.

Our mission goes beyond teaching the game. We are instilling crucial life skills like teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, followership, and accountability—tools that will benefit these young athletes long after they transition into adulthood.

One thing I've learned is that volunteering doesn't always mean serving on a board or giving countless hours each week. Sometimes it's helping in the concession stand for an hour, dragging the fields after a game, coaching a team, keeping score, picking up trash, or simply stepping in when someone needs an extra hand. Those small acts add up, and together they create something much bigger than any one person could accomplish alone.

If you've ever thought about volunteering but weren't sure you had enough time or enough to offer, I promise you do. Every hour matters. Every helping hand makes a difference. The kids may not remember who lined the fields, grilled the hamburgers, or stayed late to clean up, but they will remember the feeling of being part of a community that showed up for them.

The lights don't turn on because of one person. They shine because an entire community chooses to give a little of itself. Imagine what we could accomplish if just a few more people decided to lend a hand. Together, we can keep the lights on, the fields full, and the memories coming for generations of players and families to come.

At the heart of it all is the community, which is what I love most about Hampton Wythe Little League.

Ultimately, I volunteer so that I can experience the magic of watching the game. There is nothing quite like seeing an entire community brought together in one place—connecting, interacting, and cheering on their players under the Lights at the Ballfield.
