I have received many questions regarding Tipping / Gratuities for the Dive Crew. I pass the following information on to everyone:
Tipping a charter dive boat crew is standard etiquette, with customary gratuities ranging from 15% to 20% of the dive rate, or about $10 to $20 per tank per person in the US and Caribbean.
General Guidelines by Charter Type:
Day Charters: 10% to 20% of the total cost, or roughly $5 to $15 per tank (or $10–$20 for a standard two-tank dive).
Liveaboards and Week-Long Vacations Where Diving Is Included: 10% to 20% of the total trip cost, or around $250 to $500 per week per diver, depending on the level of service. Always feel free to tip extra to someone who has gone the extra mile for you. That is a tip well earned!!
Courses and Instruction: Tips for instructors during formal training are optional but appreciated, usually 10% to 20% of the course fee if they go above and beyond.
I hope the above information helps everyone. While tipping is at your own discretion, the above is a good general guideline.
Here’s a great article from Scuba Guru, Tec Clark! I have the utmost respect for Tec’s knowledge and know how!!
