I fear that 90% of the yoga classes being taught are being taught incorrectly and are doing more harm than good. Also, I have become disgusted by how yoga has become a business, a fashion show, and something people do to get more followers on social media...~ A.Nisch
'Yoga started first as a philosophy...then asanas were added ( inspired by circus performers, contortionists - that's why the legs behind the head poses, splits etc.) to entertain the elite aristocrats...not many people know this, because not many people REALLY seek the truth.
Yoga poses as we know them emerged only at the end of the 20th century...not 1000s of years ago...as many people believe.
Like ballet...at the times of Louis XIV, ballet was invented to entertain...and the point shoes were invented by men to make the women's legs seem longer, because that was sexy...not functional...and definitely NOT healthy.
The word YOGA originally means 'UNION of body-mind-soul'
Yet we see more of a disconnection rather then union in yoga...especially when it comes to healthy movement.
But I see all this modern yoga evolution as a very positive wave.
We are learning from past mistakes, we are embarking on a new more conscious and awake journey, exploring what IS actually REALLY HEALTHY for our body and what it means for each person individually.
Our body loves to move. Period.
My advice I would have for teachers and students, is to not believe what anybody else tells you. Study anatomy and the body functionality BEFORE teaching. You could seriously hurt someone, most often naive students that believe everything you tell them or teach them...
Study, study, study...then explore on yourself, then start teaching.
Your body is unique, with different needs and ranges of motion. Study anatomy, do your research, find some space and explore, play, move, experiment....find your own movement language that will feel good to you.' ~ Katerina Goode, YogAlign L.A. owner & instructor
