It’s National Parks Week! 🫶🏾Love the nearest Park to you today, forever!!

Today Civil Bikes joined the Rangers at the King National Park, Ranger Jenkins, Mr. Derrick, and I rode through the King and Sweet Auburn Historic Districts— stopping into Hanley’s Funeral Home, APEX Museum, and Prince Hall Mason Lodge, connecting neighborhood to stops associated with Dr. King and the National Park. It was fun and engaging!!

This was my first time inside of Prince Hall Lodge, the temporary exhibition gave me a good view into the work of the SCLC and the role of women within the organization. If not for us there would not have been an SCLC!!

And this was my first time inside of Hanley’s Funeral Home. No longer serving as a funeral home, it is a facility to support men in gaining self sufficiency and independence. The building went from serving the dead to bringing folks to life, as the representative shared!

APEX has new exhibits!! Go and see it and support. It is amazing to learn how students from local colleges and universities are interning and designing exhibits and leading tours. So much opportunity and ways to learn!

Yes, we talked about civil rights, mostly I spoke about the neighborhood history.

August flew in with a flurry of fun events, Maya opened with an exhibition and documentary screening of her film on burlesque history and how the art empowers women through dance and performance. Kennedy Simpson screened one of her favorite shows, “I Love New York”, a reality dating show with lots of good laughs and social interaction from the early-mid 2000 as a way to connect and share her need for support with event support from ☆ who is also supporting Civil Bikes in the space. And last Sunday EcoWomanist Institute Southeast (EWISE) BRAID program held a seed saving workshop, Autumn MS RD,LD and ꧁ Bush & Myco ꧂𓁙 led a highly informative and accessible workshop on saving seeds from plants you grow and eat! Civil Bikes is part of BRAID too.

Early in Civil Bikes we lead women, femme, women-identifying folx, trans rides and how to bike maintenance with AJ Robinson, Neida, and Key— it was great seeing Vanessa from those rides 12 years later! Shout out to all those we’ve met over the years 🙏🏾🌱🚲💨

Facilitators Autumn Martin (Autumn MS RD,LD )and Kaneisha Richards (꧁ Bush & Myco ꧂𓁙 ) will walk you through an overview of seed saving and a method of harvesting and storing seeds for the year ahead.

Sexy in Sepia: Black Burlesque, Sexuality, and Socialization in Media and Performance focuses on Black burlesque history in North America and highlights the way performers self-fashion their identities through costuming, performance, and community. The documentary film features the stories of 12 unique performers and connects them to a longer lineage of Black theater, burlesque performance, st******se, vaudeville, drag, parody, cabaret, and variety shows. The exhibit features burlesque objects and photos illustrating the craftsmanship, artistry, and functionality of costume pieces and props. Each performer is represented in the exhibit and in the documentary. The exhibition and film were previously part of the Sun ATL’s This is Atlanta exhibition from June 11 to July 25, 2026 under the title Self-fashioning Sacred Selves.

The film and exhibit serve as Maya Henry’s (Maya) curatorial debut connected to a longer study Black feminist thought and critical engagement of the unique social positions of women, LGBTQ, and working-class Black people in North America. “Sexy in Sepia” features costume pieces and photography centered on Black burlesque performers in North America. The accompanying documentary film tracks the experiences and practices of these artists while situating their stories in a larger history of Black burlesque, st******se, vaudeville, drag, parody, cabaret, and variety shows.

The documentary begins at 5:30 pm, followed by a Q&A with curator, Maya Henry Maya

Saturday JaiKal Photos hosted a pop up museum in The Hub @640, showcasing 3 founding artists and members of Sistagraphy the legendary Sue Ross Susan Ross Jena Johns and the founder Shelia Turner was represented by her sister, Gail Adderly. Conversations of art and history and process mingled together creating a warm and beautiful atmosphere that made leaving difficult.

What a week! Celebrating 10 years of hosting bike camp with Decatur Parks & Recreation 🎉 We hosted our first ever Advance Bike Camp, finally had enough campers to host one, after trying for several years. This is a beta year, we got one element in service, a multi-modal bike ride! Biking and MARTA for the win! The group selected locations they wanted to visited and made their own routes. They were great at figuring it out with only a little assistance to fine tune. Learning about safe streets, neighborhood streets vs main arterial roadways, using infrastructure and riding on the road. Lots of challenges such as train tracks, short lights, and limited separated and protected infrastructure gave all of us the opportunity to learn how to read the context of the street. Still learning and so much accomplished too!! We want to add elements such as advocacy and community building, we will continue to improve and get our newest class where it needs to be.

The camp had great coaches that made it all possible! Mary Jane McCain Sabrina Hassanali and Clay. Several campers who have been in camp became jr coaches. Excited to bring campers back as coaches, this is a great way to build the program. Thank you League of American Bicyclists for giving me the skills that supports my ability to be a utilitarian rider, transportation rider and a pretty good educator.
