Happy 28th birthday to our boy Cody! You have brought us much joy over the years and we’ve enjoyed watching you mature and figure out life. What many people don’t know about you is how big your heart really is. You are a strong but also sensitive guy and I always knew someone would be lucky to have you. I hope you enjoy your birthday! I also wish I could pull out some baby/toddler pics but my phone will only hold so much! We love you Cody!

I received the SWEETEST gift today in the mail. Deb Donley Author Page told me to expect a package and I was silently hoping it was some of her amazing artwork. I’ve seen many portraits she’s painted of other folks dogs and admired from afar. Thank you so much for thinking of me! I’m extremely blessed to have an online friend…almost like a pen pal!

Deb lives in Colorado and if the good Lord wills it, I’m gonna go meet her one day! If you know me, I don’t read books (except the Bible and thank God it’s in sections). If you write more than an articles worth you usually lose me. I don’t even remember now how she showed up on my timeline or what exactly made me want to read her book. It had something to do with training and she was standing in the middle of an arena I think standing on one leg. You probably remember Deb! But whatever it was it made me want to read it and I’m so glad I did. I’m incredibly blessed with her friendship! Go check her page out, I think you will love it as much as I do!

Oliver “Ollie Dog” I will always have you in my heart!❤️

We had a great day at KRHA today! It was such a blessing to see my friends. That prayer for rain sure did pay off because it did rain and it was pleasant inside up until late in the afternoon. I hate it that we had several scratches because of the heat, but in the end you just have to do what you think is best for you and your horse. It’s always a gamble in Kentucky. Always.

My friend Josie gave me the sweetest gift that she made for me. It’s a journal to write all of my “wins” in…so timely! I absolutely love it and adore her friendship and how she listens to God’s little prompts.

In the first pic is one of our mare Lady’s babies. Her name is Reece. She is a half sister to Piper and Lil Lady and also if you remember her…Sammie. How cool is that? And in the pic are her owners Chris and Josha, Josie, and me. In the second pic is Reece and a mare we raised owned by Tim and Lauren Smith. I loved Shiloh from the time she hit the ground. I’m so proud of Tim for showing her today. Such a great guy too.

And last…Tony had some big wins today! He and Ironman caught their calf on the second throw in ranch roping and he won the class! He also had 1st place wins in herd work and working ranch horse! I was so proud of his working ranch horse class. This is the first time Ironman has been off the farm this whole year. Can you believe that?

What wins do you have to celebrate today? Maybe it’s something big or maybe it’s something as small as just getting out of bed. Whatever it is, let’s celebrate those today!

Tony and June are away at a horse show so last night I got Piper out and groomed her so she could just see the world for a minute. She’s on a little stall rest right now due to pulling a shoe from her little crazy escapades in the field at night. When she pulls her shoes she tends to take a little hoof with it.

One thing I pride ourselves in is the fact that we take good care of our horses. You can see it in her coat. It is so incredibly shiny, she looks like a copper penny in the daylight. I think Excel feed has made a huge difference in our horses. Their manes grow and are shiny too.

Piper is such a quirky girl. We enjoyed our time together last night. Now it’s time for me to go feed and clean stalls and head to that horse show. It’s gonna be a hot one. Maybe the good Lord will send some of those showers to Shelbyville to cool us off for a bit. He works miracles every day 😊

Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better

A common mistake people make when working with horses is expecting progress to be linear. As if you complete a couple of modules and then you continue to the next one without looking back. To be fair, it often is just like that! With young horses who have excellent bodies, no emotional trauma and trainable characters, I've never had to backtrack.

For Dario, it's a different story. He's already 13yo and has a catalog of baggage like years of being stabled 24/7, aggression issues, poor conformation, terrible feet and restrictive riding. On arrival he was crippled- not an inch of his top line moved, he was lame on no particular leg and physically could not canter. We put him on a strict trimming schedule and Valentina the osteopath worked her magic and we then left him in the field to just be a horse for a couple of months in the hopes he would come right. It worked and so he was cleared by the vet to begin groundwork.

Initially in the roundpen he was very willing to turn in to the middle and stop, so I went ahead with hind quarter and shoulder yields and other stuff on the rope. I thought he'd be quite straight forward. However, as his body loosened up and moving became easier, he went from being unable to canter at all to cantering for 3 steps at a time, to eventually being able to canter a whole lap. At that point he decided that actually he prefered cantering to stopping! For a couple of sessions I lost the brakes completely as he cantered around and around, head up like a periscope, not looking pretty at all (pictured) but apparently just reveling in the fact that cantering was possible. I simply sat down in the middle and let him get on with it. It's a horse that has spent many years with his every move policed, controlled and restricted either by humans or by physical limitations; now he was finally able to run, unencumbered by ropes or discomfort- why wouldn't he want to make up for lost time and run to his heart's content! He found it difficult to settle down afterwards but again, previously he was never able to enjoy going fast and so he didn't have the emotional control skills to know how to calm down after getting his energy up. For the next few sessions I allowed him to run until he realised it wasn't so exciting anymore and actually quite knackering.

We're now at the point where he's figured out that stopping is just as important as cantering and so we're just about ready to go back on the rope and get back to where we were a few sessions ago. It wasn't a step backwards, it was a necessary deep dive into a step we'd only covered at surface level.

*Apologies for sporadic posting. My ankle has healed enough for me to do groundwork and ride for short periods so I'm back in work, I am having intensive Portuguese lessons 4 days a week and trying to keep up my work out schedule PLUS it's simply too much for me to write posts and the book alongside each other so expect more of the same while the book is still in the works😅

I’m so glad she posted this. If you don’t personally know the person, be careful what you say. You never know how brave that person was to post a pic or a video.

I rode in an English saddle for the first time in 3 (maybe 4) years today.

Here are some of the comments I’ve ALREADY received after posting ONE PHOTO:

- Toes are out, CLEARLY she’s never been an eq rider

- Wow, you REALLY need custom boots, those are too short for you

- Isn’t she too heavy for that horse? She needs a draft

- How can anyone call this English? Reins are too long

And honestly, there were way more BACKHANDED comments in that realm!

Here’s the thing….Im brave and have thick skin, so even after that, I’ll still be posting the video.
BUT, imagine being someone new to the horse world and being SO berated for the most STUPID things???

I’m committed to showing my journey back into the show pen, and that means showing the NOT POLISHED “comeback”, where I bought a cheap pair of boots, my breeches were too tight, my head stall was western, and my pony is a 15h ranch horse!

Normalize doing things half-assed sometimes if it MEANS YOU DO IT!!! The need to be perfect is what squashes most people’s want to get back into something they once loved or the fire to try something new!

So…IDGAF that my toes are out. At least I’m using my damn leg on my horse.

My boots ARE too short. Who TF cares.

I’m wearing BOTH western & English tack at the same time. Sue me.

But im DOING IT!!!

So….stay tuned for the video, because let me tell ya, ITS NOT GONNA BE PERFECT🤪

Well I did it…I bit the bullet and joined Strides with Amelia Newcomb for a month to try it out. Does anyone else need accountability and homework in their life to stay focused and motivated?
