🍽️ Survival Mode to Thriving Series – Part 4: Meal Prep Made Simple 💗

Let’s be honest…

Meal prep isn’t always about having perfectly organized containers lined up in the refrigerator.

Sometimes it’s simply about having a plan.

As moms, we’re balancing careers, back-to-school schedules, sporting events, homework, friendships, family time, workouts, and trying to squeeze in a little time for ourselves. It’s easy for nutrition to become an afterthought.

Meal prepping has always been my secret weapon—even when my boys were growing up. But I also understand that life happens, and sometimes our plans don’t go exactly as expected.

One of the biggest questions I get asked is:

🥗 When is the best time to eat?
🌙 Can I eat after 6 PM?
🍠 Can I still have carbs at dinner?

The answer may surprise you…

✅ There isn’t a magical time to stop eating.
✅ Carbohydrates are not the enemy.
✅ Consistency beats perfection every single time.

Your body needs quality nutrition throughout the day to support your hormones, energy, recovery, and busy lifestyle. Instead of stressing over meal timing, focus on building balanced meals with:

✔️ Lean protein
✔️ Healthy carbohydrates
✔️ Colorful vegetables
✔️ Healthy fats

Simple meals often become the most successful meals.

Think grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, taco bowls, protein yogurt, fruit, boiled eggs, or overnight oats. It doesn’t have to be fancy—it just has to work for your family.

Remember…

A little preparation today saves you from stressful decisions tomorrow.

When you fuel your body well, you have more energy for your family, your career, your workouts, and most importantly… yourself.

Survival Mode to Thriving – Part 2: Planning Your Week

With school starting back and sports season right around the corner, how do you plan your week?

Are you a paper planner person, or have you switched to a digital calendar?

For me, I’ll always reach for my Happy Planner. There’s something about writing everything down that helps me stay organized and clear my mind. Crossing things off the list gives me a sense of accomplishment that my phone just can’t replace.

Between running my coaching business, managing the Vixen Muscle clothing line, coaching clients, being involved in Team Mom responsibilities, Booster Club events, and raising two kids, if it’s not on my planner… there’s a good chance it won’t happen.

Every week I schedule:
✔️ Client appointments
✔️ My own workouts
✔️ Business tasks
✔️ Bills and finances
✔️ Kids’ practices and games
✔️ Meal planning
✔️ Family time
✔️ And yes… even time for myself.

I think this is where so many moms struggle with self-care.

We schedule everyone else’s appointments, practices, and responsibilities, but somehow our own health becomes “if I have time.”

The most successful moms I’ve met don’t necessarily have more time than the rest of us—they’re simply intentional with the time they do have. They know they can’t pour from an empty cup, so they schedule themselves just like they would any other important appointment.

That doesn’t mean every day goes as planned. Life happens. Kids get sick. Games run late. Clients reschedule.

But having a plan gives you something to come back to instead of feeling like you’re constantly playing catch-up.

The real question isn’t, “How do you fit it all in?”

It’s…

How do you make sure you’re part of the schedule too?

Because when Mom is healthier, less stressed, and taking care of herself, the entire family benefits.

So tell me…
📖 Paper planner or digital calendar?
💗 What’s one thing you schedule every week that’s just for YOU?

Survival Mode to Thriving – Part 3: 45 Minutes or Less

One of the biggest challenges moms face isn’t knowing how to work out—it’s finding the time.

Between work, school drop-offs, sports, dinner, homework, and everything else on the schedule, it feels impossible to carve out an hour or more for the gym.

So what usually happens?

We skip our workout altogether… or we spend the little time we have doing cardio because we think it’s the fastest way to lose weight.

But for many women—especially during perimenopause and menopause—that can actually work against you.

When your hormones are fluctuating, you’re under constant stress, not eating enough, and not sleeping well, adding long cardio sessions can place even more stress on your body. Instead of helping, it can leave you feeling exhausted, increase cravings, slow recovery, and make it harder to maintain muscle.

This doesn’t mean cardio is bad.

It means the right dose at the right time is what matters.

For busy moms, I’d rather see you spend 30–45 minutes doing quality strength training than an hour on the treadmill.

A well-designed workout can include:
💪 Compound strength exercises that burn more calories.
🔥 Short conditioning finishers to elevate your heart rate.
🏃‍♀️ Daily walks to support recovery and overall health.
🩷 Mobility work to reduce stress and improve movement.

You don’t need to train six or seven days a week.

You need a plan that fits your life.

Three to four focused strength workouts each week can be far more effective than hours of random cardio.

Remember, the goal isn’t to spend more time exercising.

The goal is to get the most results from the time you have.

As moms, we have enough on our plates. Your workout shouldn’t add more stress—it should help you become stronger, healthier, and give you more energy for the people who matter most.

Because when Mom gets stronger…

The whole family gets stronger.

How much time do you realistically have to work out each day?
⏱️ 20 minutes
⏱️ 30 minutes
⏱️ 45 minutes
⏱️ 60+ minutes

For most women in perimenopause, strength training is the better foundation. HIIT can still be valuable, but it should complement strength training rather than replace it.

Here’s why:

🏋️ Strength Training: The Priority

As estrogen begins to decline during perimenopause, women naturally experience:

* Loss of lean muscle mass
* Slower metabolism
* Increased abdominal fat
* Reduced bone density
* Decreased insulin sensitivity

Strength training directly addresses these changes by:

* ✅ Preserving and building muscle
* ✅ Increasing resting metabolic rate
* ✅ Improving insulin sensitivity
* ✅ Strengthening bones and reducing osteoporosis risk
* ✅ Supporting healthy hormone function
* ✅ Improving posture, balance, and functional strength
* ✅ Reducing joint pain and improving quality of life

Recommendation: 3–5 days per week

Focus on:

* Squats
* Deadlifts
* Hip thrusts
* Rows
* Presses
* Pull-downs
* Carries
* Progressive overload (gradually increasing weight or reps)

❤️ HIIT: Effective, But Use It Wisely

HIIT has benefits:

* Burns calories efficiently
* Improves cardiovascular fitness
* Increases insulin sensitivity
* Helps maintain VO₂ max

However, during perimenopause, excessive HIIT can sometimes:

* Increase cortisol if recovery is poor
* Leave women feeling exhausted
* Increase cravings
* Slow recovery due to hormonal changes
* Contribute to overtraining when combined with poor sleep and high stress

That doesn’t mean HIIT is bad—it just shouldn’t be done every day.

Recommendation: 1–2 sessions per week

* 15–20 minutes
* 20–30 second hard efforts
* 60–90 second recovery
* Stop before complete exhaustion

🚶 Zone 2 Cardio: The Missing Piece

Many women overlook the benefits of moderate-intensity cardio.

Walking, cycling, incline treadmill, or rowing at a pace where you can still hold a conversation:

* Improves fat oxidation
* Reduces stress
* Supports heart health
* Helps recovery
* Lowers cortisol compared to frequent HIIT

Recommendation: 2–4 sessions per week for 30–45 minutes.

Bottom Line

For women in perimenopause, I recommend this breakdown:

* 💪 60–70% Strength Training
* 🚶 20–30% Zone 2 Cardio
* 🔥 10–20% HIIT

This combination is generally the most effective for maintaining muscle, managing body composition, improving metabolic health, supporting bone density, and feeling stronger during the hormonal transition.

Given your focus with Vixen Muscle, this approach also aligns well with coaching women through lifestyle change: prioritize lifting heavy with good form, include regular walking or moderate cardio, and use HIIT strategically instead of relying on it as the primary training method.
