Have you ever heard of an Occipital Horn? This is a bone spur that occurs at the occiput due to stress put on the attaching structures at the base of the skull (i.e. ligaments, muscles, and other attaching tissue) mainly from forward head posture. Think of it as a little horn growing down at the base of your skull. When a person spends a copious amount of time in poor posture, especially looking down, the stress exerted on the soft tissues attaching to the skull causes the body to lay down layers of extra bone, similar to arthritis. Numerous case studies are showing increased screen time is the main culprit in causing this issue, especially in younger generations. The use of electronics leads to the neck being kept in hyperflexion for an extended period of time, causing irritation which leads to exostosis (a benign outgrowth) meant to counteract the effects of hyperflexion. Chiropractic care offers numerous techniques to assist with getting your body back to its proper posture as well as addressing forward head posture so you can develop healthy habits moving forward.

Did You Know?
The Cervical Lordosis (or neck curve) is one of the most important curves in your spine. This curve protects the neck from stress and strain and prevents damage to the spinal cord and nerves by reducing the force exerted on them. The normal curve of the cervical spine is approximately 40 degrees. This plays a critical role in allowing proper nerve energy to be transmitted throughout the body. Reductions in your neck curve can stretch the spinal cord and brain stem and that stretch can be transmitted by the nervous system all the way down to the lower back.
Many people suffer from chronic pain and illness due to poor postural habits (i.e. always looking down at our phones and computers!). The average weight of the human head is 10-11lbs and for every inch of forward head position there is an additional 10lbs of strain on the muscles in your neck. Over time this increased weight bearing in the neck has been proven to impede nerve energy into the limbs and organs, potentially leading to disability and disease. There are numerous chiropractic techniques that can be used to assist in getting your body back to its proper posture and help relieve the strain on your nervous system by assessing forward head positioning.

“Get Knowledge of the spine for this is the requisite for many diseases” – Hippocrates 460-370 B.C.
A little-known fact among the modern medical community is that chiropractic care has been around since antiquity. Texts from 2700 B.C. to 1700 B.C. have been found in China and Greece detailing spinal manipulation and the benefits it has on the body. These texts are among some of the earliest writings in recorded history. The practice of “Bone Setting,” as the term was known then, was one of five traditional Chinese medical treatments and is linked to the development of both chiropractic care and osteopathy. It wasn’t until 1895 that the word “chiropractic” was introduced to the public and medical professions, derived from the Greek words “Cheri” meaning hand and “Praktos” meaning done which translates to “Done by Hand.” The merits of chiropractic care have been recognized and written down for over 4,000 years.

Too funny not to share...

Did You Know?
Did you know that the medical industry has Identified up to 14 different types of headaches? Each with its own unique cause, effect, and treatment. While the sources of headaches vary, nine out of ten people will suffer from them in their lifetime, with 50% of those being chronic. Chiropractic care offers several safe, non-invasive, non-pharmacological treatments for headaches. These treatments range from soft tissue therapies to manual or device assisted spinal adjustments and more. Adding these treatments to your routine can assist in breaking the cycle of chronic headaches.

What Is Subluxation?
If you’ve ever been to a Chiropractor, you may have heard them use the word “Subluxation.” What is Subluxation? Well, the term itself has come to have different meanings to different health care professionals over the last century. In 1863 Henry Smith defined the term as “An Incomplete Luxation in which the bone is partially displaced from articulation, where some portion of the articulating surface remains in the natural cavity or upon its edge.” In 1906 Modernized Chiropractic was published and set out to correct how the word “Subluxation” related to the spine and spinal health. Modernized Chiropractic advised that the spine is a moveable column containing many segments capable of moving even when subluxation is present. To the chiropractic industry subluxation does not mean that the bone is “stuck” but rather that the motion of the bone has been altered. The purpose of the chiropractor is to restore NORMAL motion to the bone, rather than “moving it back into place.” While the term is still debated to this day amongst medical professionals, the basis for it remains the same. Subluxation is a bone misaligned either within, or without, it’s natural cavity, placing pressure on the nerves, and creating discomfort within the body. No matter how you define it, Chiropractic care is there to address subluxations and restore function to your body so you can live your life more comfortably.

What is Radiculopathy?
If you have ever been to a Chiropractor or medical doctor you may have heard them use the term “Radiculopathy.” This term describes a range of symptoms that are caused by the pinching of a nerve root in the spinal column. The indicators of radiculopathy vary, depending on where in the spine they originate, but frequently include pain, weakness, tingling and numbness in your extremities. Chiropractic care addresses malalignments in your spine and reduces pressure to your nerve roots thus alleviating the symptoms of radiculopathy.

Did You Know?
That alterations in the autonomic nervous system can cause Hypertension (High blood pressure)? Hypertension is a multifactorial condition that is among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Regulation of blood pressure depends greatly on the activity of the autonomic nervous system. 20 to 30% of individuals diagnosed with hypertension will not receive relief with traditional pharmacological treatments alone. Integrating Chiropractic care into your medical routine can aid in providing relief for people suffering from hypertension.

Nothing better than that Monday Adjustment!

Did You Know?
That 11-20% of the population experiences vertigo each year? Vertigo is a condition that causes dizziness, feelings of imbalance, and nausea. This condition can be caused by subluxation of the upper cervical spine, referred to as “Cervicogenic Vertigo.” Chiropractic care addresses and corrects subluxation of the cervical spine, thus helping to alleviate the symptoms of cervicogenic vertigo.
