One of our Registered Dietitians on foraging and/or growing your own food: “Roasted Fiddlehead ferns with wild ramp (aka wild leek) greens and bulbs- If you know what these are, you know they’re one of the more ephemeral and valuable wild foods in the northeast in the spring. The window for harvest is only a few weeks and I usually have luck finding them the first week of May.
People often think it is weird to eat wild foods. But to me it’s weird to be entirely reliant on other people from all around the world to supply 100% of your food when your backyard is oasis filled with not just edible, but delicious foods that have been eaten safely for thousands of years.
One of the major issues with our modern food system is the lack of diversity among plant foods in the grocery store. There are a ton of easily identifiable wild plants you can eat that are nutritional gold mines.
Adding diversity to the plant foods in your diet is a great way to improve your gut health and help you get nutrients you might not get from other areas in your diet. Some of my favorite foods are not found in grocery stores, but sourced sustainably from Mother Earth.
In a world where food is often overly processed and incredibly expensive, consider growing your own food or finding some on your hikes. Getting back to our roots is one of the best ways to improve our diet. Let’s bring back food with a story.”
