Q: What is one yoga pose you'd recommend for pregnant women?

A: Squat (Malasana)
Malasana is a deep hip opener, stretching the hips, groin, inner thighs, ankles and low back. Increasing the range of motion in the hip joints can be benificial to aid with utilizing this position in labor.

Benefits: When the hips dip lower than your knees in a full squat, it opens the outlet of the pelvis (about 15-20% wider) and offers better alignment tipping the pelvis forward putting baby in an anterior position that helps baby descend in labor. Squats also shorten the length of the birth canal. Variations of malasana are used often during the pushing to help shorten this phase of labor.

Contraindications: If you are in the 3rd trimester you may want to provide support under the sit bones when squatting to avoid any premature pelvic pressure. Also in the 3rd trimester, if baby is in a breech position, Fierce Posture (Utkatasana) may be used as a modified option. You may also want to avoid squatting after baby "drops" if they are posterior or in a non-optimal position. Other contraindications include: low lying placenta, hemmorhoids
