On this day in cooperative history, Rockingham Cooperative held their Annual Picnic at Massanetta Springs in 1936 with in between 4,000 and 5,000 individuals present to celebrate their cooperative and hear updates about cooperative business.

Annual Picnics were all-day events during the early years of the cooperative with bands playing, games for kids and adults, and speakers coming from across the the region to address the crowd.

On this day in cooperative history, Rockingham Cooperative purchases the Grace Street lot from the Chesapeake & Western Railway for $4,000 in 1930.

The cooperative would continue to operate out of its rented space, from Rockingham Milling Company, on C&W Drive until 1932 when a showroom and warehouse space construction was complete on Grace Street.

This was designed as a recruitment and social event to build excitement and enthusiasm for the new cooperative. This article, published in the Daily News Record, previewed what attendees could expect by joining the picnic. These picnics would become annual events and draw crowds of 3,000 +.

On this day in cooperative history, Rockingham Cooperative held its annual meeting during its tenth year in business in 1931 and it was reported that sales to members had grown $35,000 over the previous year, all during the Great Depression, which showed the value that the cooperative way of business offered to its members.

Over 200 members were in attendance at the annual meeting and over 2,000 would attend the annual picnic that was held a week later to celebrate membership and community spirit.
