Hartford Fire Department Responds to Third-Floor Apartment Fire at 132 S. Main Street

White River Junction, VT – At 4:13 PM on August 1, 2026, the Hartford Fire Department responded to 132 South Main Street for a report of smoke in a third-floor apartment. While units were en route, a 911 caller reported an active fire in Unit 302, and the building’s automatic fire alarm was also received. The response was immediately upgraded to a first-alarm building fire.

The first arriving unit reached the scene at 4:19 PM and encountered a smoke condition in the third-floor hallway. Firefighters gained access to Unit 302 and located combustible materials burning on top of the stove. The fire was quickly extinguished. A bystander from an adjacent apartment had used a portable fire extinguisher on the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival.

The fire was declared under control at 4:40 PM. Incoming units confirmed the building had been evacuated and worked to remove smoke from the interior. The building is a five-story structure containing 42 apartments and first-floor offices, owned by Execusuite LLC of Lebanon, NH.

The occupant of Unit 302 sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene by EMS but declined transport. The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by combustible materials placed on the stove and a burner being unintentionally activated. The affected occupant was unable to return to the unit until cleaning could be completed. All other tenants were able to reoccupy their apartments.

Mutual aid and assistance were provided by Lebanon, Hanover, and Windsor Fire Departments, as well as the Hartford Police Department.

All units cleared the scene at 5:56 PM.

At 13:08 today, the Hartford Fire Department responded to 34 Overlook Drive in Hartford for a report of smoke in a building. The incident occurred at a multi-family apartment building owned by Twin Pines Housing Trust.

The first fire department unit arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the lower level of the building. The incident was immediately upgraded to a building fire, prompting a first-alarm response.

Crews located the source of the smoke in an exterior communications panel serving telephone and internet utilities. The fire was quickly extinguished by first-arriving units.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Hanover, Lebanon, and Windsor Fire Departments.

The fire appears to be electrical in nature, and the exact cause will be further investigated.

All occupants were able to return to the building, and no injuries were reported to residents or fire department personnel.

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Yesterday, June 30th, marked Lieutenant Mitch White’s final shift with our department. After 20 years of dedicated service to this community, Lt. White hung up his gear for the last time and officially entered retirement.

Mitch has been a steady, trusted presence in the firehouse and on countless emergency scenes. His leadership, experience, and commitment to the safety of our community have made a lasting impact on all of us.

Please join us in congratulating Lt. White on a well‑earned retirement and in thanking him for two decades of outstanding service. We wish him all the best in this next chapter.

Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and check in on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Hartford’s public libraries and Bugbee Senior Center can be used during regular business hours to cool off.

The Sherman Manning Aquatic Facility is also a great resource to beat the heat.
