He has stretched every day since August and he is exactly as tight as he was in camp. At some point the stretch is not the answer.

Muscles and joints are hardware. The nervous system is the software running them, and it holds things on purpose when it does not feel safe. Stretching something that is being held does not change the reason it is being held.

The card on slide 5 is four checks you can run on that kid this week. The language for all of this comes from Shawn Sherman , a nervous system methodology created by Shawn Sherman. I took the Level 1 course this summer.

Save this for the next kid who says he is still tight.

I coach D1 football players in the morning and help high school coaches at night.

Fifteen years in college weight rooms: Springfield, Merrimack, URI. The biggest lesson came in 2019, when a strong, fast roster kept losing physical battles and we learned to train contact like any other quality. That system lives at URI now, and a version of it is inside every plan I hand a high school coach.

Start with the Saturday letter. Comment LETTER and I’ll send you this week’s.

You went heavy on core work and it still did nothing. The protocol everybody quotes has a rule buried inside it. At least two of the four to six exercises have to be one sided and fight a twist, and both sides working at once trains the wrong job. Slide 6 is the audit. Save it and run it Sunday night before you write next week’s core block.

Your card says 75 percent. It does not say what that cost.

Ten reps at 75 and two reps at 95 are the same set. Both are relative intensity 100. The percent is the input. The reps decide the bill.

Post your top set from this week, the percent on the bar and the reps, and I will tell you where it lands on the chart. I read every one.

He reported at 195. He is 185 in October. That is not a lifting problem.

Practice, special teams and a game raised what he burns every day, and what he eats never moved.

So the body took the difference out of the muscle he built all summer.

Then he looks flat, so the lift gets cut, and now he is light and weak instead of just light.

Read the weekly trend, not the day after practice, and go look at the eight hours between the last bell and the field.

You have a kid you call soft. Ask him what time he fell asleep before you decide who he is. Under 8 hours of sleep is 1.7 times the injury rate, and one bad night costs him 24 percent of his testosterone. He is not choosing to be flat. The fix costs nothing, and it beats every recovery gadget you were about to buy.

You built the Ferrari.

You never taught him to read the road.

That’s the missing piece in most football development.

We train the body relentlessly.

Squat. Sprint. Jump. Clean.

But what about the eyes?

A kid doesn’t always get beat because he’s slow.

He gets beat because he saw it late.

And you can’t fix a seeing problem with a faster sprint.

Vision and reaction are trainable skills.

The best part?

You don’t need another piece of equipment.

A tennis ball.
A partner.
Your voice.

10 minutes at the front of the warm-up.

Ball drops. Near-far focus. Number call-outs. Peripheral reactions.

Do it every session and you start building something most programs completely ignore.

Don’t just train the hardware. Train the software.

It’s 11pm. You’re googling “why do my kids cramp in camp” and clicking links written by people who never coached a down.

I fixed that for my Insiders.

The Briefing Room is open. 77 strength and conditioning research briefings, filed into 11 issues, searchable by keyword and tag. Camp injury timing. Hamstring prevention. Rate of force development. In-season maintenance. Type the word, read the brief, coach with a plan.

A new issue drops every week. The research is done. You just have to show up.

Gridiron Warrior Insiders is $29 a month. Your first month is $1. Link in bio.
