flower of the day

Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) also know as Cape Jasmine

Scent memories of the pungent perfume from a Gardenia flower flash my mind way back to mamaw’s yard in the spring. I’d call it a garden but the land never received respect worthy of a name. A yard on a hill with a hodgepodge collection of various cuttings exchanged between sisters. We’d visit Louisiana (lose-ianna) and bring back little plastic baggies containing a wad of water soaked paper towels wrapped around various cuttings. At home, Mamaw would plop the raw stems in a jar of water and the cuttings would sprout roots. That simple! One spring there were no less than 30 Gardenia shrubs blooming on the yard.

Lord have mercy.

Native to Africa and imported by traders, this fragrant flowering shrub was first introduced to the American south by Scottish naturalist Alexander Garden and in tribute, Jane Colden, an American Botanist first proposed the genus name Gardenia in 1753.

Gardenias love acidic soils. For the best growth, start your plant in the ground now with good soil that is well draining. The root ball should sit a tad bit higher than the soil, always allow for settling and be careful not to pile too much around the base of the stems. Add mulch, water consistently and enjoy the fragrant white blossoms next spring!

Do you need to log some community volunteer hours?? 😁

We need help!! Prep, decorate, and get Historic Downtown Hartselle ready for the Depot Days festival

We're looking for community members to help and have several volunteer opportunities available during Depot Days itself, from helping with vendors and activities to supporting different areas throughout the festival.

Whether you can give an hour, a morning, or help on festival day, every extra set of hands makes a difference!

📧 Interested in volunteering? Email: [email protected] and we’ll get you connected with an opportunity that works for you.

It takes a community to make Depot Days happen — and we’d love to have you be part of the crew! 🚂❤️

What can you plant in the garden in August? More than you might think!
As summer crops begin to wind down, it is time to start preparing for fall gardening. Beans, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, radishes, turnips, and other vegetables can still be planted, depending on your location in Alabama. Your lawn and landscape also need attention this month, especially when it comes to watering and monitoring for insects and diseases.
