🚀 THIS WEEK’S MISSIONS ARE LOADING…🧠

This week, our homeschool crew has a problem to solve.

Actually…

A LOT of problems to solve. 👀

And there’s one catch:

Sometimes getting the right answer isn’t enough. You have to figure out the steps that get you there.

This week, we’re diving into Algorithms & Problem Solving but don’t expect us to just sit around talking about computer code!

What if you had to give someone instructions to complete a task…but they could ONLY do exactly what you told them?

No guessing.
No filling in the blanks.
No “you know what I meant!” 😂

Could your instructions survive the test? 🤔

Could there be more than ONE way to solve the same problem?

And what happens when your solution doesn’t work? 👀

Our students are going to have to think, test, troubleshoot and try again.

💻 Wednesday Computer Science Cohort 💻

Our Cohort is investigating one deceptively simple question:

What IS an algorithm?

Here’s your first clue…

You probably followed several of them before you even arrived at XP League NW San Antonio. 🤯

💠 Getting dressed.

💠 Making breakfast.

💠 Brushing your teeth.

💠 Following directions somewhere.

💠 Starting your favorite game.

But what happens if the steps are out of order What if one is missing? And could a computer figure out what you meant to say?

Wednesday, we’re putting that idea to the test. 💪

🎒 OPTIONAL BRING-IT CHALLENGE

Bring an example of something that requires steps or instructions.

It could be:

🧱 LEGO/building instructions
🍪 A favorite recipe
🎲 Instructions from a board game
✈️ Origami directions
📝 A how-to guide
🤔 Or something completely unexpected!

See if the class can figure out the “algorithm” hiding inside it.

👕 OPTIONAL THEME

This week is all about problem solvers, so students are welcome to wear:

🧠 STEM or science-inspired
💻 Coding/tech-inspired
🎮 Favorite gaming gear
🕵️ Puzzle or mystery-inspired
👕 Or simply something comfortable and ready for a challenge!

Nothing special needs to be purchased — creativity is always welcome. 🩷

🔥 BONUS FAMILY CHALLENGE 🔥

Parents…try this one at home:

Ask your student to give you EXACT step-by-step instructions for making a peanut butter & jelly sandwich (or another simple snack).

Then follow their instructions literally.

If they say:

“Put peanut butter on the bread.”

…but never tell you to open the jar…

Well… 👀😂

Do exactly what they said.

We have a feeling they’ll discover something important before they ever get to class.

Two classes.
Lots of problems.
And probably a few instructions that go hilariously wrong.

🚗⚽ ROCKET LEAGUE IS A LOT MORE THAN CARS + SOCCER!

This week, our Tuesday and Thursday homeschool crews went Beyond the Boost with a deep dive into Rocket League! 🎮🏎️💨

Instead of simply jumping into matches, we pulled the game apart to discover just how much is happening behind every hit, save, aerial and goal.

Our students explored how physics, momentum, timing, positioning and boost management influence what happens in the arena. We also looked at something that’s just as important as mechanical skill:

🧠 Making smart decisions
🤝 Understanding team roles
🗣️ Communicating with teammates
👀 Reading what’s happening around you
⚡ Knowing when to attack and when NOT to

One of the biggest takeaways?

The player closest to the ball isn’t always the player who should hit it. 👀

Sometimes the smartest play is positioning yourself for what happens next.

And that’s a lesson that goes well beyond Rocket League.

Knowing your role, communicating clearly, thinking ahead and trusting your teammates are skills our students can carry into school, sports, future jobs and everyday life.

At XP League NW San Antonio, we’re always looking for the STEM, strategy and life skills hiding inside the games our students already love. We had another Esport Certified Coach come into our classroom and take our lesson to whole another level by demonstrating some key skills to the game. The kids even challenge Coach Repected in a 1v3 match!! While that match was going on we took a break and made bracelets that was inspired by Rocket League with their very own soccer ball charm 🩷⚽️🩷

Sometimes a rocket-powered car chasing a giant soccer ball can teach you a whole lot more than you’d expect. 😉🚗⚽

💻🧠 YOU CAN BUILD A COMPUTER…BUT HOW DO YOU TELL IT WHAT TO DO?

Our Wednesday Computer Science Cohort tackled another piece of the computer puzzle this week!

We recently explored the physical components that make computers work. This time, we asked:

What’s the difference between HARDWARE and SOFTWARE?

Students discovered that hardware is the physical technology we can touch, while software provides the programs and instructions that allow us to actually use that hardware.

⌨️ Keyboard = Hardware
🖥️ Monitor = Hardware
🎮 Controller = Hardware

But…

🎮 A game = Software
🌐 A web browser = Software
📝 An application = Software

Then came the bigger discovery:

They need each other. 🤝

A controller without software doesn’t know what actions we want it to perform and software can’t magically display something without physical hardware to run it.

We challenged our students to look beyond memorizing definitions and start thinking about how the two communicate and work together as one system.

And once you start looking around, you realize this relationship isn’t limited to desktop computers.

🎮 Game consoles
🚗 Cars
📺 Smart TVs

Computer systems are hiding everywhere. 👀

Our goal with our Computer Science Cohort isn’t simply teaching kids what technology is.

We want them asking:

“How does it work?”
“Why does it work that way?”
and eventually…

“Could I build something like that?” 💚💙 And who knows they just might here with us ⚙️

A new week is almost here, and our homeschool crew is heading into two very different worlds. 👀

🚗⚽ Tuesday + Thursday

This week, we’re taking a game many of our students know well and looking at it from a completely different angle…

Rocket League.

At first glance, it seems simple:

Cars.
A ball.
Two goals.

But is it really that simple? 👀

What happens when physics, movement, timing, positioning, communication and split-second decision-making all collide inside one arena?

Why can two players hit the same ball…and get completely different results?

And what separates simply chasing the ball from actually understanding the game?

🚗💨 There may be a LOT more STEM hiding inside Rocket League than you think.

💻 Wednesday Computer Science Cohort

Meanwhile, our Computer Science adventurers are investigating something completely different.

Last week, we explored some of the physical pieces that make computers work.

But here’s this week’s mystery…

A computer can have:

🧠 A processor
💾 Memory and storage
⌨️ A keyboard
🖥️ A monitor

…but without something else, it’s really just a collection of electronic parts.

So what tells the hardware what to DO? 🤔

Some parts of a computer you can hold in your hands.

Others…you can’t.

Wednesday we’re discovering the relationship between hardware and software and why one isn’t very useful without the other.
