Guys and gals … I cannot put you in an aggressive position if you are not flexible, and have tight hips. If you are going past your hip capsule range of motion on the bike, you are not only losing power but you can be causing hip impingement and your knees will feel it as well.
If you are riding a lot, and/or sitting at a desk or in your car, you may be exposing your body to adaptive shortening.
Adaptive shortening occurs when you experience muscle tightness, caused by a muscle being forced to remain in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time. This shortening causes a reduced range of motion, a feeling of tightness in the muscles, and added stress on the connected tendons.
As you sit, your glutes (butt muscles) are becoming weaker and weaker, making it even hard to activate them properly.
You don’t really notice “adaptive shortening” is happening at all because your body is pretty tolerant to some point, and then your joints and nerves will let you know and you become imbalanced.
This post is really to educate you athletes on the importance of opening up your hips. I strongly encourage using a yoga block with this exercise and putting your foot on top of it. Make sure you keep your hips square and push them forward while raising the opposite arm.
There are many stretches you should be doing, but this would be one of the key stretches in maintaining a healthy pelvis and spine.
This guy comes to win every time he goes to the line. From mountain, to gravel, to road, to time trial, is a master of all disciplines.
He came in for a mountain bike fitting on his Epic, in prep for . We decided to make a change on his stem length to get him more aerodynamic for that course (this is prior to that change), and went with for less lateral knee travel, and more foot stability.
One of the great things about this Retul system is it shows a lot more data, not only from the sagital plane, but also from the frontal plane. We were able to observe positive changes when we changed the insoles out.
Wishing him some good luck for his racing season & full ⛽️ on the pedals! Allez Scooter 🇫🇷!!!
