The Shift You Can’t Leave: Traumatic Events That Stay With You Long After You Clock Out.

“Trauma creates change you don’t choose. Healing is about creating change you do choose.”

~ M. Rosenthal

In the shadow of 9/11 having just passed on the 25th Anniversary of one of the darkest hours America has faced, I felt it appropriate to bring some attention to the sacrifice and dedication of our first responders. I was a brand-new medic in 2001, and I can remember watching the twin towers fall and realizing that in that moment there were many people that just their life. Later we all learned that it was 343 first responders to be exact. There is a famous saying that goes, all gave some and some gave all. This statement was never truer than on that day.

I take a minute this week to honor those that have given their life to save others and at the same time bring awareness to the ever-growing need for more attention for better mental health programs. Regardless of the years served, the calls you make will slowly take a piece of you. The question will be, how will you hold up when the tones no longer go off.

Over the years I have hosted multiple guest that have made it their life’s mission to helping those that are suffering and provide a pathway to hope for a better tomorrow. I talk about a few of those previous guests on this episode and I leave you with a request to please reach out if you or someone you know is going through a difficult storm. There are people out here that want to help, all you need to do is take that first step toward healing.

OUT NOW - Never Allow Others to Devalue Your Worth.

“Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.”

~ M. Forbes

Regardless of your background, your accomplishments, your friend circles or your social status, anyone can fall victim to allowing others to steal their self-worth. Listening to the negative drum beat of telling you what you can’t do, or you are not capable of, can be a poison.

This week I look to drive home that our self-worth must be driven by our own confidence. Too many times, we can focus on our shortcomings or our failures, and this can make you feel less than. Then when someone comes along and points our one of those areas that you lack confidence, it can almost feel validating, and you lean into the belief that you are not capable.

I was not immune to this type of thing growing up. In fact, I can honestly say that this was the normal thought applied to my ability by most people when I was growing up. Now, to be fair, I had never proven to anyone that I was capable of more up to a point in my late teen years. However, the moment I decided I was worth more and that I was going to prove to myself that the only one holding me back was me, things started to change.

My message this week is simply that…stop holding yourself back. You will always be capable of more than you give yourself credit for, you just have to embrace what is possible and then be lased focused on achieving that goal. I hope to stand as the example of what is possible for and as I often say, “if I can do it, so can you.”

OUT NOW - Why We Should Embrace Our Failures. This week we take a long look at how our failures help us succeed.

“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

~ W. Churchill

How do we grow through adversity; we must learn to embrace our failures. No one wakes up and says to themselves that they want to make mistakes or face difficulties. However, it is inevitable that we will all have setbacks and ultimately come up short of our goals. When we face one of those moments, the only question left to answer next is, what are we going to do about it, or better yet…what will we do with it?

Some of the most impactful learning lessons that I have ever received in my life came at the hands of an incredible failure. Working extremely hard at something does not always end with things working out the way you wanted them to. I found this out several times throughout my life. The pain and the loss of direction can sometimes leave you feeling defeated and without direction.

This was true for me early in my life, but when I finally figured out that each setback and upset had a purpose, I started to grow in ways that I had never grown before. My perspective was, the setback gave me tools that I would never had gotten if things would have worked out the way I wanted them to. Ultimately that was going to make me stronger and better in the long run.

This week I share some of those moments that gave me a completely different appreciation for those difficult moments and put me into a more focused mindset. I know that each of you out there have plenty of relatable stories or moments and given the right perspective, you may be much better than you give yourself credit for and ready to tackle the next great challenge that is headed your way.
