Heading north to my first taxidermy competition of the season, and this time we’re bringing just one entry. For those who may not know, taxidermy competitions work a little differently than most people think—it’s a grading system, meaning everyone leaves with a ribbon. The real prize isn’t the ribbon, it’s the critique sheet. You go to be judged by some of the best taxidermists in the country, to have them point out what you did right, what you did wrong, and how to improve. The critique sheet I receive this weekend may end up being the most meaningful one I’ve ever earned. This is probably the best piece I’ll have ever entered, and while I’d be thrilled with a first-place ribbon or any additional award, what matters most to me is having one of the very best in the world tell me how to make my work even better. Wish us luck!
