This kid....
Yup...so... many of you who know me, know that I take a Looooooong time to start to really click with a horse. I like them all, but to me they feel like strangers. I slowly begin the communication lines, and try to build a language that we can both feel comfortable, safe, and valued within.
There is a reason I have literally NEVER bought a horse for myself.... because it takes me... also literally, about 100 hrs of partnership to really feel like we have enough depth to our communication to be able to consistently have powerful conversations :). Every time I start to say, "wow... this horse is starting to click!" Or "gosh, Im really starting to like this horse..." I look at my development log, and to within 5 hours we are getting close to that 100 session mark :).
Its such privlege to be part of a horse's development from the begining :) thanks Kayla and family ;)
Maverick is making some really great strides this week :). Skinny spaces and gates have been a little emotional for him, and so I loved seeing him think through this so thoughtfully at the end of our session today.
I ask the same thing of myself and every horse I touch.... Be present and humble ... if we do that then we can create the communication to achieve anything.
Helping horses to keep their brain present and engaged and think their way through pressure is one of the principles I keep most sacred as I train young horses. If you flood horses with a tool and force them to freeze and tolerate it, at a certain point it wont work. If you never expose horses to anything challenging then I believe we rob them of the opportunity to learn and grow.
As young horses, the paradigm they learn to learn in will stay with them for their whole lives. Here Im helping Solo to learn that even though he is skeptical of the flag, he can continue to respond and be available to the pressure on his halter, as well as my requests with my body.

Coastal Adventure 2026 :).
Its always a big endeavor ... but every year when I get the chance to stroll down miles of beach with like minded people enjoying the sun, sand and surf with awesome horses, Im always reminded that its so worth it!!! Seeing dreams come true and horses enjoy the purpose and focus makes my heart happy. Thank you to everyone who joined us.... horses and humans. Who moved mountains and organized life at home to spend 10 days immersed in horsemanship, and adventuring. The team spirit we had this year was 👏 🤩 amazing!
And thanks always to Katie Phillips Celaya .... its so fun leading adventures with you!

Really loving the way this c**t is coming along! This is one of my favorite excercises to teach young horses. Find the laneway, dont push and dont pull on me, maintain gait, and understand rhythmic motion. Solo has done this a bunch at the walk and trot, this was his first attempt at the canter! Nice job Aleia and Solo :)
It was such a blast to spend the day coaching the Horse Development Team at Cedar Haven Ranch during my Natural Horsemanship Class! Stay tuned for more offerings of this 3 hour class this summer and fall :). It is focused on finding all the pieces of your foundation that need review, and challenging you to expand your ground skills and ridden!
