Powerful, Humble.

The 2023 NFL Combine has been going strong, but back in 2020, a young man named Jalen Hurts was interviewed at the Combine by Eagles GM Howie Roseman.

The Eagles have released audio of the comversation, and now Jalen's response to the question, "Why should we draft you?", can now be told.

Answered Jalen:

"I’ve been able to cement myself into two prestigious programs. I think people have found a way in both places to follow me. I’m not going into these places saying, ‘Hey, come on, y'all got to follow me.’ That’s earned, that’s not given. People lead because their peers let them. I don’t know, for some odd reason, people follow me everywhere I’ve been.

“I’m a student and I want to learn. I just want to maximize all the gifts I have so I can be the best I can be, and be an asset to some people, an organization and impact the people around me and bring some people with me.”

Wow.

The best job interview answer ever?

It sold Howie Roseman.

And the rest is history.

Thoughtful and introspective.

Jalen Hurts chatting with Sirius XM Radio at the prestigious NFL 100 Awards where he was asked to assess the Eagles' season and the Super Bowl loss:

"For a guy like me, that loss was a way for me to lay the foundation for what’s to come. The only direction is to rise and learn and be diligent and continue to grow. Everything that we have experienced are formative experiences- they have all prepared us for what’s to come.”

Jalen Hurts is 24 years old.

His wealth of wisdom continue to impress.

And he will be heard from again.

Head Trash.

We all have it. (CEOs, Athletes, Mom’s, Dads, Friends, etc.)

On some days it’s louder than on other days.

Head Trash can interfere with our ability to be our best.

Be aware of your head trash - your self-talk.

Hear it and don’t let it define you or limit your TODAY.

Identify negative self-talk patterns.
Reframe negative thoughts. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones
and use positive affirmations to help boost confidence and self-esteem.
Use visualization and mentally replay great moments in work, life, and sports to fuel your confidence.
Practice mindfulness: breathe, meditation - take a few moments to quiet your mind.
Take action towards your goal.

Brain development from birth to age 6 is enormous! The peak of neural connections referred to as synaptic density happens by the age of six. After that neural pruning begins. We actually lose neural connections.
Teaching children to take some quiet time to just think and not have constant overstimulation and input gives them time to process. Kids today are bombarded by sensory input constantly. Most suffer from neural fatigue. Most are lacking in sleep. They maintain jam packed schedules and their time to process information is lacking. Quiet time is important. Even free time is monopolized by phones, television or computers that is simply more input.
Even 20-30 minutes of no input or stimulation can have a huge impact on neural energy reboot. Studies have seen as much as 30% increase in neural energy levels.

Start.

Just start.

Whatever it is you have been putting off.

Start now, imperfectly and courageously.

You don't have to wait for everything to be perfect or for the circumstances to be ideal. Just start where you are, with what you have. You can refine, adjust, and perfect it along the way.

The most important thing is to take that first step towards your goal."

This is the advice I gave myself today as I embark on my latest project: creating a journal for injured athletes. It's a project I planned to complete in 2022 but never got around to starting.

But now I have created a deadline, one that is fast approaching. On June 13, I'll present to a group of Sports Medicine professionals, Athletic Trainers, and Physical Therapists "From Setback to Comeback: Sport Psychology Strategies for Athlete Injury Recovery." I'll share my strategies to help athletes overcome the mental challenges of injury and confidently return to sport.

This is personal to me. In 2021, I had a freak fall that left me with a head injury, broken elbows, and torn ligament in my dominant wrist. I had to use all the skills I teach for optimum performance to get through this tough time.

I know firsthand that when an athlete is injured, it can be one of the most challenging times in their career. They can lose their sense of identity, community, and self. That's why there's a need for additional resources to help athletes mentally recover from their journey.

So, I've finally started my journal project, imperfectly and courageously.

And if you know of an athlete who has navigated an injury and would like to share their strategies and advice with other athletes, we would love to learn more. Together, we can help athletes overcome their injuries and make a successful comeback. They can connect with me via this form http://ow.ly/ygtO50N11xM

Mindset shows up in everything we do.

When I told my family that I was going to publish a mental performance training journal for athletes, my oldest gave me a quizzical look. (DOUBT)

My objective was to create a resource to help athletes learn essential mental performance skills used by elite athletes, to compete more relaxed and with greater confidence.

When I published the Great Sports Minds Journal in December 2020, I would check orders almost daily.

Two years later - it's different. I am too busy to check every day.

Last night I took the time to see how the Journal was performing this month.

To my surprise, I discovered that I had sold 128 copies in February, including two large group orders. (Most self-published books sell less than 250 - 300 copies over the lifetime of the book!)

More individual and large group orders are the goal.

The Journal is an excellent tool for a coach to use with their team or for a Travel Program to introduce to their program.

THE GREAT SPORTS MINDS ATHLETE JOURNAL - is a game plan for success in sports and life. This 90-day Journal helps athletes of all levels unlock their full potential through three comprehensive sections:

The Winning Formula: This section consists of 8 fundamental questions that will help you clarify what truly matters as you pursue excellence in your sport and life.

90 Daily Reflection Pages: Unlock your inner athlete with daily writing prompts and motivational quotes that will help you establish consistent reflection habits, communicate your goals, express gratitude, embrace self-improvement, and hold yourself accountable to your commitments.

12 Weekly Challenges: Take your mental performance to the next level with essential mental performance skills used by top athletes to leverage their minds' power for success. These weekly challenges include powerful techniques like breathwork to center and calm, visualization exercises, releasing a poor performance, and more.

And that's not all! As a special bonus, you'll get to sample our online mental performance training program and one of our most popular meditations, Letting Go.

As an author, it's exciting to see my work being appreciated by readers and making a positive impact.

Join the countless athletes who have already benefited from THE GREAT SPORTS MINDS ATHLETE JOURNAL - order yours today!

The Super Bowl was days ago, and a young quarterback has already turned the page.

As Jalen Hurts departs the Eagles facility for a brief break, he will certainly enjoy a few days of rest- but you can bet he will be back to work very soon.
Jalen Hurts doesn’t rest much, and the comment he made during Super Bowl week that has stuck with me is when he was talking about what drives him.

Jalen Hurts has been motivated by his doubters, but there is something else inside him that makes him tick.

This comment from Jalen gives us all an idea of what makes him go:

"I want to quantify the work I put in. I really don’t like to look at the results- never. It’s the process of getting better. I can look back and think of so many things that motivate me and drive me to do more and to be the best. Why do I keep getting up and going and going and going? I had a purpose before everybody had a question.”

Jalen Hurts is 24 years old, and he loves the process of getting better.

Most will agree that Jalen Hurts is as driven as any athlete in America.

And he will be back.

First Class.

I thought Patrick Mahome's line last night about Jalen Hurts after the Super Bowl was great!

Said Mahomes about Jalen after Hurts passed for over 300 yards, ran for 70 yards and had 4 TD's in a Super Bowl loss:

"If there were any doubters left, there shouldn't be now."

No doubt a classy comment from Mahomes about a classy opposing quarterback.

Words of wisdom.

You could see the pain in his eyes as he fielded questions after the Super Bowl.

Jalen Hurts and his Eagles had just lost the game 38-35 despite Jalen accounting for over 370 yards of offense and 4 TD's- yet he sat patiently answering questions from the media.

In the midst of his shattered dream, Jalen reached into his heart and said this:

“I think the beautiful part about it is everyone experiences different pains, everyone experiences different agonies in life, but you decide if you want to learn from it. You decide if you want that to be a teachable moment- I know that I do... My only direction is to rise."

Jalen Hurts gets it.

Classy in victory & classy in defeat, the Eagles quarterback remains real and authentic.

And despite the setback, one thing remains unquestioned:

Jalen Hurts will be back.
