What should you say when your child is disappointed?
Our first instinct is often to fix the problem, explain the lesson, or remind them of everything they should appreciate.
But before children are ready for perspective, they need to know their feelings have been heard.
Begin with:
“I can see how disappointed you are.”
“That did not go the way you hoped.”
“It makes sense that you feel frustrated.”
Then, when they are ready, help them look beyond that one difficult moment:
💚 Who helped or encouraged you? 🥋 What did this experience teach you? 💪 What are you proud of, even though it was hard? 🌱 What will you try differently next time?
These questions do not dismiss the disappointment.
They help children understand that disappointment and gratitude can exist together.
They can be upset about the result and appreciate the opportunity.
They can regret a mistake and value the lesson.
They can have a difficult moment and still recognize their own courage.
Gratitude is not pretending everything is okay.
It is helping children see that the hard part is not the whole story.
