sometimes it isn’t the outcome or the result that defines us… sometimes what happens along the way matters a whole lot more.

you’re down at half time; the game is over,
the season is over,
your high school career is over.
You could start questioning everything, the very thing(s) that got you to the position you’re in today. You start to look for a solution to the problem, change this, change that.
You could give up, quit, go home.
Or…
you hold still and steady… you accept that the outcome is no longer something you can control, but your response to your circumstances is, and always is, completely under your control.
You are the response!
You dig deep, deeper than you thought you could imagine, because you’ve never been this close to it being over before.
You outwork, outcompete, and outplay your opponent, but that’s not enough. You’re still down.
You do everything you can, in the circumstances you find yourself in and you can have no regrets.
You finish the game a better person that the one who started it. But not because you won the game, but because of what the game brought out in you. And that’s the power of sports! This is why we play. To learn! To grow!

We may have lost a soccer game today.
We weren’t at our best in key moments of the game and we were held accountable for that. It’s the playoffs, anyone can win, you better be at your best or it could cost you your season!
But, unless you’re the last man standing, you’ll always lose the last game of your season.
It’s not the outcome that matters most, it’s what you did along the way.
The life lessons that you learned from playing a high school sport, using a platform to worship the one you gave you legs and lungs, surrounded by people who build you up and want you to succeed. That matters most.
This team finished stronger than they started.
This team scored the last goal.

sometimes it isn’t the outcome or the result that defines us… sometimes what happens along the way matters a whole lot more.

during these unprecedented times, we took some time to connect with senior Megan Martin for some thoughts, reflection and advice as she looks back on her time with

💭 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗿?
⚽️ 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 ⚽️
My favorite memory from wesleyan girls soccer would be the final game of my sophomore year. We were in quarterfinals on our home field.
The game was so intense and we had gone into overtime. Kyndal and I had been practicing corner kicks where I would be able to head the ball to score. In the final seconds of overtime, the moment came and I scored a header from a corner kick Kyndal took. It was such a special moment with the team and the excitement from the team and crowd was unbelievable. It was such a surreal moment that I will never forget. 📸1️⃣

👭🏻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 👭🏻
My favorite memory would be team sleepovers 📸2️⃣ or car rides where I was able to make relationships with people I would have never thought to be friends with.
I will always cherish those memories and friendships.

🦠 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀?

One thing I have learned during this crazy time is to never take anything for granted.
Not a school day or practice or simply eating at a restaurant.
These are things I miss and would have never thought would be taken away.
I have also learned the importance of relationships and being with one another.
Not being able to see my friends and teammates has been so hard because I love each one of them.

🎓 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

I will be heading to Appalachian State University in the fall to major in Elementary Education.
Post college, I would love to be a teacher at a private school.
I love being around kids, and I believe teaching is so important.

📚 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹?

Some advice I would give to underclassmen would be to reach out to other people and do things you’re only able to do in high school.
I know sometimes it seems like high school will never end and sometimes it sucks, but you really will miss the community and relationships from Wesleyan.
Go to all the games 📸3️⃣ homecoming, prom.
Go all out for spirit week.
Hang out with friends after school. Have fun and remember that you’re only in high school for four years so take advantage of your time.

enjoy every game and every practice...even if it’s fitness.
You will miss it one day.
You never know when your last game is whether it’s from an injury 📸4️⃣ (or a pandemic).
Love on each other.
Reach out to the quiet girls.
Carry the tradition of FAMILY.
And have fun!!
Make Wesleyan girls soccer an environment that people WANT to play.

⚽️ 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴(𝘀) 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗿?
My favorite things about Wesleyan girls soccer were the car rides to get food like Barbs Tuesdays or Crepe Wednesdays or even before games. WISL was also an experience I enjoyed leading every Wednesday 📸5️⃣ I also loved the family atmosphere and the relationships I have gained from playing a game I love.

life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain ❤️⚽️ this might not of been what our seniors had in mind, picturing the final time they took to the field as a high school player, but the lessons we learn on the field during our time in the program, helped us make the most of today. control what you can control, do not define yourself by your circumstances, it’s what you do that counts! we are so thankful for the class of 2020. this moment is in the history books! no looking back! we love you! ❤️

Megan is as tough as they come. Her grit and determination will be sorely missed, but has been clear for all to see and be inspired by, during her time in the program. this is us & today we lost a soccer game. “success isn’t final, failure isn’t fatal, it’s the courage that counts” thanks to John Wooden, even when we lost the game, we weren’t defeated. it took us way too long to play to our potential today, and our opponent held us accountable for our mistakes and punished them. today was a beautiful learning opportunity for us, and one that we will take in our stride and be stronger because of. we wanted to post a picture because life isn’t about celebrating only when you win, and posting only your highlights, but rather learning that success is the peace of mind knowing that you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming. therefore, today, we were not successful regardless of what the scoreboard said. we did score the last goal ⚽️ and we did finish strong 💪🏻today we lost a soccer game, but this is us ❤️
