Club MMA will be CLOSED Monday, September 7th for Labor Day.

Before Labor Day became cookouts, long weekends, and the unofficial end of summer, it started as a day to recognize the people putting in the work.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, and more than 140 years later, we're still pretty big fans of hard work around here.

Enjoy the day off, recharge, and we'll see you back on the mats Tuesday.

Sometimes you have to win by losing.

When someone gets deep on a single leg and has already started the takedown process, fighting against all that momentum isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes the best defense is to go with it.

Instead of desperately trying to pull your leg free, we continue with their momentum, use their commitment against them, hit the flip, and come out on top and ready to attack.

That’s an important lesson in grappling: you don’t always have to stop what’s happening—you just have to learn how to make it work in your favor.

Stay focused. Stay motivated.

🥋 TRIANGLE DEFENSE FOR MMA

Knowing how to defend the triangle is extremely important—especially in MMA.

When you’re throwing punches from the top, it’s easy to get aggressive and leave an opening. Your opponent can chop the back of your neck, control your posture, and start locking up the triangle.

The key is recognizing it before the triangle is fully locked.

As soon as we feel that chop and bite, we react.

➡️ Go with the energy
➡️ Pressure the knee down
➡️ Spin around the head
➡️ Clear the danger
➡️ Get back on top and start attacking

In MMA, awareness during your offense is just as important as the offense itself. Recognize the signal. React early. Escape. Get back to work.

Stay focused. Stay motivated. 👊

🥋 CAN YOU ESCAPE THIS SUBMISSION? | Arm Bar Defense From Guard

The biggest thing I want people to understand about the word “escape” is that an escape usually means you’re already late.

Instead of waiting until the arm bar is locked in, we need to recognize the signals of what’s about to happen.

When the person on bottom starts pulling your elbow across your body and places their foot on your hip, that’s the international signal for:

“I’m about to arm bar you.”

Recognize it early and start defending immediately.

We secure our arm with a rear naked choke-style grip, catch the leg, stack our opponent, and maintain heavy pressure. From there, we slowly work our arm free while keeping them compressed.

Once the arm is safe, don’t give the position back.

Keep the pressure. Smash into the pass.

The best submission escape is recognizing the submission before it ever gets locked in.

Stay focused. Stay motivated.

Cage Striking — Part Two 🥊

Now we’re taking our cage striking work and starting from the center of the cage.

We start with our striking and transition into the shot. Our opponent stuffs the takedown, so instead of forcing a bad position, we abandon it, come back up with the uppercut-hook, then immediately re-shot and drive them back to the fence.

As soon as we hit the cage, we attack. Knees immediately, maintain pressure, and continue building our offense.

If we get the underhook, we arm wrap behind.
If we get the overhook, we arm wrap in front.

Then we continue striking and working.

The real lesson here is learning how to transition when Plan A doesn’t work.

Striking → Shot → Stuffed → Striking → Re-shot → Cage Pressure → Striking.

MMA isn’t about one technique working perfectly. It’s about being able to transition from one opportunity to the next without stopping.

Build the patterns. Build the reactions. Keep working.

Stay focused. Stay motivated.
