You never know where your journey will take you when you join a dojo. “Learning karate” might be the initial motivation, but we quickly realize a dojo family offers so much more than that. It’s a little village. We look out for each other, we laugh together, eat together, depend on each other, and grow older and wiser together.

When someone joins a dojo, the potential is there for that student to embody what it means to have martial virtue. And for some, the potential is there to become someone who embodies the martial aspect fully and carry on the style to another generation. Like marriage or child rearing, the outcome cannot be predicted, but the dojo that fosters the best in its members increases the odds that people will not only stay, but learn much more than “karate”.

On the two jutsu (Or, knowing what needs to be shown)

One time after a pretest where all the potential candidates for dan ranking were present, Sensei mentioned that the proper idea of partner work is harmony. Remove the notion of victory and defeat. That is conflict. Replace it with harmony, like dancing. This will not only improve our physical flow, but develop a healthy psyche. The result is the removal of ego and pride from our movement and an openness to honestly understand oneself and the technique for what it actually is trying to develop.

Sensei went on to say that in a test what is most important in partner work is to show harmony of movement without trying to dominate. He said the kata and makiwara will clearly show the judges who has martial skills (bujutsu) and partner work shows your heart (shinjutsu). While still maintaining a martial attitude, the more skilled partner should match the ability of the less skilled (and he joked, “who maybe is senior”).

So I arrived at the community center and the doors are locked. Looks like they are painting inside. Disappointed that they didn’t warn us. So, no class tonight

I will call them tomorrow to find out if they will be done for Wednesday
