Tonight we’re celebrating Earth, Wind & Fire’s timeless 1978 classic, “September,” which song has a fascinating story behind its famous date!
It started out that Maurice chose “the 21st night of September” because “twenty-first” had exactly the right three-syllable rhythm to fit the melody. Years later, Maurice’s widow, Marilyn, later revealed the real inspiration: September 21 was the original due date for their son, Kahbran. He arrived early in August, but Maurice kept the September date in the song. Talk about a musical keepsake! 💛
And that unforgettable “ba-de-ya” hook? It started as a placeholder vocal, but Maurice decided not to replace it with real words. His lesson: never let a lyric get in the way of the groove! 😄
