At Uptempo Athletics, player development goes beyond the court. 🏀🎥

We teach our athletes how to study film, recognize opportunities, make better decisions, and truly understand the game, not just play it.

Our coaches genuinely care about every athlete’s physical and mental development. We’re building skilled, confident, and intelligent basketball players prepared for the next level.

Aloha Uptempo Families,

For the safety of our athletes, families, coaches, and staff, Uptempo Athletics will be closed today, Tuesday, September 8, due to the current weather alert and islandwide closures. All training sessions, rentals, and gym activities are canceled for today.

Although conditions may appear calm in some areas, we want to avoid unnecessary travel while weather, road, and power conditions can change quickly. We will provide an update regarding tomorrow’s schedule once it is safe to reopen.

Please stay safe, stay off the roads unless necessary, and take care of your families. Mahalo for your understanding.

That’s a wrap on the inaugural Point Guard Academy. Five days. One gym. One incredible group.

To every athlete in this photo. Thank you for showing up ready to work every single day. That’s the whole game. To every family who chose us for the first camp we’ve ever run, thank you for trusting Uptempo Athletics with your kid. We’re going to remember this week for a long time.

And to our staff, Head Coach Kekoa Ng, Coach Kameron Ng, Coach Taylor, Coach JoVon McClanahan, and Coach T, you set the standard for what a guards-only camp should look like. Not one wasted rep. Not one wasted moment.

Kids who were quiet on Monday were calling out screens by Friday. Kids who were passing up shots on Tuesday were pulling up with belief. Athletes were coaching each other in between reps. That’s the magic that happens when a room full of guards decides they’re going to raise each other’s standard together.
We knew this week would be something. It was even more.

Mahalo, Hawaiʻi. This is just the beginning.

Two coaches. One mission.

Watching Coach Kam and Coach JoVon teach together has been one of the highlights of this week.

They have a unique ability to take concepts that can seem complicated and break them down in a way every player can understand. Whether they’re just learning the position or already competing at a high level.

No matter the age or skill level, every player walked away understanding not just what to do, but why it matters.

That’s what great coaching looks like. It’s not about making the game sound complicated. It’s about making the game simple, clear, and teachable.

We’re grateful for these two and the knowledge they’re pouring into the next generation of point guards.

Day 3. 🏀🧠

By now, our players have realized this camp isn’t just about becoming a better basketball player.

It’s about becoming a smarter one.

Today, we went even deeper into the mental side of the game. Learning how to think ahead, communicate with purpose, lead teammates, and understand the little things that never show up in the box score.

The best point guards aren’t always the fastest, the tallest, or the most athletic. They’re the ones who see the game differently. They make the right reads, stay composed under pressure, and make everyone around them better.

That’s what we’re trying to build this week.

Our goal isn’t simply to send these athletes home with better handles or a new move. We want every player to leave this camp with a higher basketball IQ, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of what it truly means to lead a team.

Watching the conversations, the questions, and the growth over these first three days has been incredibly rewarding.

Two more days to go. Let’s finish strong.

A great point guard doesn’t just know how to play the game. They know who they are on the floor.

Today’s classroom session with Head Coach Kekoa Ng challenged our players to think beyond ball handling and passing.

Coach Kekoa broke down the three types of point guards:

🏀 The Facilitator – Controls the game, gets teammates involved, and knows how to manage the flow.

🔥 The Score-First Point Guard – Attacks with confidence, puts pressure on the defense, and creates opportunities through scoring.

⚖️ The Hybrid – The best of both worlds. Knows when to take over and when to get everyone else involved.

The biggest takeaway? There isn’t one “right” way to play the position. The key is understanding your strengths, recognizing your weaknesses, and learning when your team needs you to lead in different ways.

Basketball IQ is what separates good players from great ones, and that’s exactly what we’re building this week.

Thank you, Coach Kekoa, for another outstanding session.

Happy Birthday, Coach Morgan Hikaru Aiken!

This interview has been sitting in our camera roll since 2024, when Coach Morgan came to Uptempo to lead a skills camp. Somehow, we never got around to posting it. Looking back, I think today is the perfect day to finally share it.

We’ve always respected Coach Morgan and what he’s built with Grind Basketball. Running a successful program takes more than basketball knowledge, it takes passion, consistency, and a genuine commitment to helping young athletes reach their potential. He’s been doing exactly that for years.

One thing we appreciate about Hawaiʻi basketball is that, regardless of what program we represent, we’re all part of the same basketball community. We all want to see our kids grow, compete, and become better people through the game. Coaches like Morgan continue to make that possible.

Happy Birthday, Coach! Mahalo for bringing your skills camp to Uptempo and for everything you do to grow the game here in Hawaiʻi. Wishing you continued success, good health, and many more years of making a positive impact on the next generation.

Please join me in wishing Coach Morgan a very
Happy Birthday! 🤙🏀🎂
