Yes, May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaiʻi—a holiday honoring the tradition of making, giving, and wearing lei.

The phrase “May Day is Lei Day in Hawaiʻi” dates to 1928, when poet Don Blanding proposed it in a Honolulu Star-Bulletin column. His colleague Grace Tower Warren suggested tying it to May 1 and coined the slogan. The first celebration was held that year at Bank of Hawaiʻi, and Governor Wallace R. Farrington made it official statewide in 1929.

More than a flower festival, Lei Day preserves Hawaiian culture. Each island has its own symbolic color and flower, featured in lei and pageantry. Events include lei-making contests, hula, music, and parades. The lei itself symbolizes aloha—love, friendship, and respect.
