1874 Election

Following the election of King Kalākaua, supporters of Queen Emma rioted after losing in the contentious campaign to replace King Lunalilo after he passed away without naming a successor.

On this day, 168 years ago, June 19, 1856, Queen Emma married King Alexander Liholiho at Kawaiahaʻo Church.

At 11:30 in the morning, Emma made a grand entrance in an elegant carriage, accompanied by her attendants and the ladies of Kamamalu. They arrived at the southern gate of the palace. At the same moment, the King arrived with his entourage, which included the distinguished L. Kamehameha, other nobles, and military officers.

Moi Emma's vows to Moi Alexander Liholiho: "Owau, o Emma, ke lawe nei au ia oe, e Alexander Liholiho, i kane mare naʻu, e paa loa iaʻu, mai keia la aku, iloko o ka maikai a me ka ino, ka waiwai a me ka hune, ka mai a me ke ola; e aloha, e malama, a e hoolohe, a hiki i ka wa e hookaawale ai ka make ia kaua, e like me ka ke Akua kauoha hemolele; a no keia mea ke hoohiki nei au."

Today we celebrate King Kamehameha Day!

On December 22, 1871, Kamehameha V declared June 11 as a holiday in memory of his grandfather Kamehameha I. Government offices and banks were closed, many businesses were not open or opened for a half day.

The first Kamehameha Day celebration was low key and held on the plains of Kalaokahua (an area between what is now downtown Honolulu and Makiki). Tents and booths were set up and the day included horse races, bike races, foot races and other activities. According to the Hawaiian Gazette, “The last and most laughable event of the day was the wheelbarrow race.”
