The Art of Peace Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, practiced the art until he passed away in 1969 at the age of 86. AIKI is to win over the self.

Men, women, and children around the world enjoy aikido as a lifetime training with continuous personal growth. The Spirit of Aikido
The foundation of AIKI is love. It is the embodying the spirit of the heaven and the earth in one's heart, and the maintaining the great spirit of loving embrace for all, in order to fulfill one's mission, that ought to be the Way of the martial art. This does not me

The sensei watches in silence as bodies move like water across the mat, every fall a lesson, every breath a rhythm. In his eyes lives the calm of countless seasons, knowing that true aikido is not in the throw, but in the harmony left behind after it.

In Aikido, the bow is not merely a gesture, it is a pause between breaths, a moment where ego softens and respect takes its place. Before technique, before movement, before conflict, we bow: to the dojo, to our partners, to the art, and to the endless path of learning. In that quiet lowering of the head lives humility, gratitude, and the understanding that true strength begins with reverence.

Nikyo, the second teaching, unfolds like a quiet whisper beneath motion. It is not a clash, but a conversation subtle, precise, and inevitable. The wrist turns, not with force, but with quiet authority, drawing a line through balance and intention. In that small spiral, resistance dissolves.
There is a sharpness to nikyo, a fleeting spark of discomfort that demands attention, yet it is never cruel. It reminds rather than punishes. The body yields, not because it is broken, but because it understands #合気道 #合氣道 #ハワイ

Members from across our community gathered at the Nuuanu YMCA for an evening of shared spirit filled with laughter, fellowship, and the quiet strength of Aikido. Together, we’re reminded that we rise higher when we choose to lift one another.

In Aikido, size fades into the background, where presence and precision take the lead.
It’s not the weight of the body, but the lightness of movement a turning of hips, a breath in rhythm that transforms imbalance into control, and strength into something shared rather than opposed #合気道 #合氣道 #ハワイ

In Aikido, meditation is not separate from movement—it is the stillness carried into action. Through practices like mokuso (quiet sitting), the mind settles, the breath deepens, and awareness becomes clear and steady. This calm presence is then maintained on the mat, even in motion.
Meditation in Aikido teaches the practitioner to remain centered under pressure, neither reacting with fear nor forcing control. By returning again and again to breath and awareness, the body moves naturally, and the mind stays open. In this way, meditation becomes the foundation of harmony—within oneself and with others. #合氣道 #合気道

In Aikido, the Japanese phrase Onegaishimasu is commonly said before beginning practice with a partner or instructor. It roughly means “please,” “I humbly request,” or “let’s practice together,” but its meaning goes deeper than a simple translation. In the dojo, saying onegaishimasu expresses respect, humility, and gratitude toward your training partner for helping you learn and improve.
Aikido emphasizes harmony, cooperation, and mutual development rather than competition. The use of onegaishimasu reflects these values by reminding practitioners that training is a shared effort. By saying it at the start of practice, students acknowledge their partner’s role in their progress and set a respectful tone for the training session. It reinforces the spirit of courtesy and mindfulness that is central to Aikido practice

In Aikido we lift each other not with our hands,
but with patience, trust, and time. One falls, another helps them rise, one struggles, another shares the rhythm. On the mat we discover that true strength
is not in throwing someone down, but in helping them stand stronger than before. Thank you to our friends who came to support us at our pop up for our new Leeward Dojo. #合気道 #合氣道
