Aloha and thank you for checking out my page. Inside the Quan system I have decided to honor one of my Sifu's styles called Tai chi praying mantis. I have developed a smaller system called white praying mantis boxing called Bai Tang Lang Quan.

Is Quan effective in a real street fight?
Quan uses gross motion techniques to block and attack. This is because blood moves to the bigger muscles which can only uses gross movements in a fight or flight mode. Fine motor skills are out the window so complicated techniques are useless in this situation.

A student of mine had a confrontation he tried desperately to avoid. As the aggressor tried pushing his way into the house, my student remembered just one technique, an upper cut to the chin. This lifted the attacker off the ground and planted him squarely on his face. A friend had to drag the attacker out of the door way and apologized for the incident.

What is the essence of Quan?
We strike with the core and use momentum to over power or yield to draw the attacker in, then twist to off set their balance.

Does Quan use Chi?
Chi follows thought and breath and blood follows chi. By placing your mind on a certain part of your body you will manipulate chi flow. For example, if someone grabs your wrist and you try to pull away it would be difficult, because you are pulling from the wrist. But, if you put your mind on your elbow and pull back as if you are elbowing someone behind you, you will find that you have more power to escape the wrist grab. This is called mind placement.

Sensitization of the hands to feel chi is the very basic of our practice. A combination of visualization and breathing chi into the palms is a start, then working on scanning plants, animals, crystals and people. More will be discussed when you train with us.

Quan was developed by Bruce Chu to express his 38 years of Martial arts training. Pulling from the multiple systems he had learned such as Wing Chun, Baqua and Ninjutsu, he melded them into one fluid style. Quan means circle. He found that you could generate powerful strikes in close or far range attack by using the circle. A relaxed strike has tremendous power and through relaxation one could maintain strength as they continually follow through with hits, locks, and throws. Some of the movements uses spiral energy to twist the opponent off balance. Often people would think oh, a powerful martial arts system with a whirlwind of strikes and throws, defeating any attacker that might come your way. but this is not what Bruce intended to art to be. It is about the nurturing the spirit, finding your center and evolving.
