When my daughter Carah first started martial arts, I wanted her to learn how to fight. I wanted her to know how to protect herself and have the confidence to stand up for herself.

What I discovered was that the greatest lessons had nothing to do with fighting.

Martial arts taught her confidence, resilience, discipline, humility, and how to work through frustration when things didn’t go her way.

Over the years, I’ve seen the same transformation in countless kids. Shy children become leaders. Timid kids find confidence. Kids learn that failure isn’t the end—it’s part of growth.

I enrolled Carah so she could learn how to fight.

What she really learned was how to live.

And that’s why I believe every child can benefit from martial arts.

On the anniversary of General Choi Hong Hi’s passing, we remember a man whose life was shaped by a dream far greater than martial achievement. He did not build Taekwon-Do only as a self-defense / fighting system; he built it as a path of character, dignity, and humanity. His hope was that through Taekwon-Do, people would become stronger in body, but even stronger in spirit.
What mattered most to him was the moral purpose of the art. He wanted Taekwon-Do to be a force for justice, self-respect, and peace, and he believed it should belong to everyone, without barriers of nationality, religion, politics, age, or gender. That vision gives his legacy a rare kind of greatness: it was never only about technique, but about the kind of person one becomes through practice.
Twenty-four years after his death, his presence is still felt wherever Taekwon-Do is taught with sincerity. His successors may carry different titles, and the path after him has not always been simple, but the real inheritance he left was responsibility. The true heirs to his legacy are those who protect the spirit of Taekwon-Do, keep its values alive, and teach it with humility, honesty, and respect.
Today, we do not only mourn his passing. We honor his dream. We remember a founder who gave his life to an idea bigger than himself, and we renew our promise to carry that idea forward with loyalty and gratitude.
