SECRETARIAT ❤️
“He should never have been beaten. Make no mistake, my friends. He was the greatest racehorse who ever lived, and I was the luckiest guy in the world to be on his back.”

If we waited for Golden Tempo to run before posting about him, we'd miss so much. Instead, we speak of him between races—at rest, in training, in those quiet moments that reveal character. Because we've fallen in love with this horse.
He runs last. One hundred meters from the wire, he's still behind. Then he accelerates like the champions do—like Zenyatta, like Big Red in his best moments. You feel it coming. The speed isn't forced; it's dormant, waiting.
The Derby was a miracle we didn't quite expect. By the Belmont, we knew. We knew it would happen again. The distance, the pace, his peculiar genius—it all aligned.
Now we wait for the Travers.

SUNDAY SILENCE
“It’s the end of a wonderfully blessed racing career, and the beginning of a new one. He’s been a wonderful horse and he’ll be a wonderful stallion.”
- Breeder/Owner Arthur Hancock III, on the retirement of Sunday Silence. Hancock was correct. Standing in Japan, Sunday Silence became the world’s leading stallion by offspring earnings ($713,124,822)

SECRETARIAT 🏆🏆🏆

“He’s 1100 pounds of baby fat, he eats too much and too often. The only reason he doesn’t eat more is because he’s too busy sleeping. He only does what he wants to do, exactly when he wants to do it. He lays against the back of the starting gate like he’s in a hammock in the Caribbean. When he finally does get out of the gate, it takes him forever to find his stride”
~Lucien Laurin, Secretariat's trainer

Did You Know that Secretariat not only had a larger heart than the average horse (three times the average size!), but his stride angle was a lot wider than other race horses. The stride angle is the maximum opening between the front and rear legs, usually occurring at push off from the rear foot.

Secretariat's stride angle was 110°! Researchers found that for every degree a horse increases the stride angle, he increases the stride length by 2%. This means that if the stride angle is increased just 10°, the horse will cover 20% more ground with each stride!
