The 3rd Ward Chess Park turns 6 years old this Friday! 😮 ♟️

We might be a chess park, but you can play dominoes too!

Did you know that dominoes originated in China as early as the 12th century and made their way to Europe through trade routes before becoming a staple in African American communities in the American South?

In neighborhoods like Third Ward, Texas, dominoes weren’t just a pastime—they were a way of life. Domino parlors like the one at Emancipation (formerly Dowling) and Holman once buzzed with laughter, trash talk, and the clack of tiles on tables. These spaces weren’t just about competition—they were community hubs, where stories were swapped, wisdom shared, and bonds formed across generations.

Though many of those domino parlors have vanished with time, their spirit lives on under the shade trees and on front porches, where elders and younger generations still slap bones on folding tables, keeping score and keeping up with the block. These games are about more than points—they’re about presence. A way to stay rooted, stay informed, and stay connected.
