Where it all began…

Much like our modern transportation system, the Old Natchez Trace was the commerce link between the mid-Atlantic states and the port of New Orleans. Unlike today’s system, travelers faced a perilous three-week barge trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers—and an even more dangerous journey home on foot.

From the late 1700s through the mid-1800s, Native Americans, traders, settlers, and soldiers traveled this historic road. In some places, their footsteps wore the soft ground down as much as 15 feet.

The original Trace passed through what is now downtown Houston, Mississippi, near the Tanglefoot Trailhead, through town, and east of Highway 15 North across Houlka Creek.

Tough, brave, and resourceful people overcame incredible challenges to build their lives and fortunes. Today, the people of Houston continue carrying that spirit forward as they build a stronger future for themselves and their community.

An old name is new again. This is Old Trace.
