Why should you get a CHL? If you have looked this far, you probably have some interest in concealed handgun licenses.
Since 2011, Safe Guard has provided essential resources such as our Concealed Carry courses, Gun Safety Courses, Basic Pistol Certification, School Safety Officer Certification, Reacting to an Active Shooter training, and other Firearm-Related courses. Perhaps you think you don't need one, and we're not suggesting everyone should have one, but here are some reasons you should consider. Please note
, these reasons consider only Texas and its unique laws. Although some of these reasons may apply to other states, please check with the other states for their particular requirements.
• The required training includes instruction on safe gun handling and storage in the home and while traveling, important subjects for anyone wishing to protect friends and family.
• The required training for a Texas CHL includes extensive discussions about the intricacies of Texas laws concerning the justifiable use of deadly force in self-defense. This is an important topic for anyone that owns a firearm that might be used for that purpose.
• The required proficiency test is a good confidence builder. You don't have to be an expert shot, as it only measures your ability to hit a large target at close range and demonstrates the hazards of attempting longer distance shots.
• A Texas CHL is sufficient documentation that you have passed a background check, and exempts you from the NICS check when buying a gun from a retail dealer. Your name will not be processed through the FBI when you purchase a gun.
• A CHL identifies you as someone that has never been convicted of a serious crime, or minor crimes in the past 5 years. In an encounter with a law-enforcement officer, this should reduce any perception of a threat to the officer's safety.
• Even if you do not choose to carry a handgun after getting a CHL, you will have the legal option to begin doing so if you perceive that the threat level around you has risen (i.e. there is a string of driveway robberies in your neighborhood).
• The availability of a CHL increases the perception of probability that a violent perpetrator will encounter an armed victim. This deterrence benefits every law-abiding citizen.
• A larger number of CHL holders translates into a perception of popular support that will not go unnoticed by legislators that might vote to restrict or repeal the CHL law or attempt to impose other anti-gun measures.
• If your spouse has a CHL, and you drive her car, and her gun happens to be in the car, there is no risk of you violating the law.
• There is no need to proceed directly from your residence to and from a sporting event in which you use your handgun, or to lock your handgun in the trunk or some other secure container for transport.
• Acquiring a CHL sets a good example for your children. Carrying a handgun illegally does not show proper respect for the law.
